As "artificial intelligence", which is predicted to replace "mental
labor", develops, some "white-collar workers" today have begun to carrythe concerns of the Luddites 200 years ago. However, in doing so, we are
ignoring the fact that the source of the problem is not so much the
"machines" but those who own them, namely the bosses, the capital class.
Likewise, this approach will be nothing more than repeating the cheap
and vulgar perspective that assumes that the "guilty" during the periods
when migrations were at their peak was not the bosses who took advantage
of them as cheap labor, but the immigrants themselves.
Two things stand out here; first, the soundness of our argument
regarding the elimination of property, which we insistently defend as
communists of all kinds. Second, the issue of whether the
decision-making processes regarding who will use this "technology" or
who can use it will be as open as possible to the direct participation
of everyone. It can be said that we have finally agreed on the first -
albeit at a theoretical level. However, beyond the confusion about how
the latter will take shape, that is, the development of direct
participation mechanisms that will require "representation" as much as
possible or as much as necessary, we seem to be faced with a common
"perception problem".
"Artificial intelligence" is not something to be afraid of in itself;
for some reason, some people are probably being dragged into a virtual
perception of fear created by fictional futuristic stories and movies.
This may also be a perception-management strategy that the bosses
themselves want and subtly impose. Let me repeat: what is really to be
feared is not "artificial intelligence", but those who possess it; the
bosses! Because, as is often the case, those who have the "power to
seize material resources" have done, are doing and will continue to do
everything they can to develop "artificial intelligence" in a way that
will benefit them, beyond possessing it, as in all forms of technology.
This article does not aim to make an infrastructure-superstructure
assessment of today's "state" mechanisms based on their cooperation with
"capital" or their direct articulateness. It does not aim to discuss who
is/will be dominant and decisive. This relationship is quite "deep" and
close, as was clearly seen during Trump's second election campaign;
therefore, it is unnecessary to discuss it. In this context, it may be
necessary to address the relationship of "artificial intelligence" with
the state(s) beyond capital, perhaps especially in relation to
"security" (by which I mean, of course, the security of the "state")
mechanisms, in a separate article.
"Artificial intelligence" can essentially be considered as a tool that
accelerates "decision-making" processes that (willingly or unwillingly)
require "mental labor". It allows the processes of analyzing, evaluating
and making the final decision on data to be done much faster than any
human being. In essence, the emergence of the "computer" provided a
great opportunity to accelerate the analysis of data, but the evaluation
and especially the "making the final decision" stages appear as a very
new "breakthrough". This is exactly the aspect that is seen as
"frightening" from the perspective of people, because it is a situation
that overthrows the "decision-making" ability or "advantage" of humans!
It seems that the "AI decision-making decision" on certain issues will
continue to be made by humans themselves, not by "AI"; therefore, as was
the case in the "mechanization" process before, humans will continue to
work in jobs that require "mental labor". However, in this process, the
number of people who need "mental labor" will inevitably decrease. This
situation may, over time, cause "white-collar" workers to face
employment problems, and therefore unemployment and loss of wages.
As can be understood from the course of events, architects, engineers,
lawyers, physicians, etc. may start using artificial intelligence
modules; however, although "AI" has "decision-making ability", its
"authority to decide" will be completely related to the decision to be
made by humans. This decision will be determined by those who have
"authority" in the relevant field; therefore, it seems that "diplomas"
in various license fields will continue to have the decisive advantage -
at least for now. Nevertheless, it is very clear that those who have
career goals within market mechanisms will not feel very comfortable;
because, as mentioned above, the need for "mental labor" is likely to
decrease quantitatively/numerically, if not qualitatively.
In this case, it can be thought that "diploma-holding" white-collar
workers who use artificial intelligence effectively in their own
decision-making processes, faster than before and at least with the same
reliability (correct) functionality, will gain an advantage in the
"labor market". Those who are "behind" in this regard, that is, those
who "refrain" from using artificial intelligence modules for various
reasons, may continue to claim that they do more qualified work (which
is often true), but they may suffer different losses (work and/or wages)
due to their own business processes being carried out much slower than
those who use artificial intelligence. In short, although having a
"diploma" is still advantageous in terms of decision-making authority,
it can easily be said that "diploma-holding" workers who are more
familiar with artificial intelligence will have more luck in the "labor
market".
"Artificial Intelligence" is such an important issue that its control
cannot be left to either capital or states. Its development in the
current process seems to be in the hands of companies, generally
depending on hardware (chip technology, etc.) and software. However,
since many companies are directly connected to governments or those who
govern governments, having control over either of them or both of them
(since we do not/will not have the chance to intervene in the process)
will continue to be a problem for us who "have to work" in any way.
In my opinion, one of the most important issues in the near future will
be "access" to artificial intelligence; because companies developing
different modules are content to show us only "the tip" of the iceberg,
and even the part we can reach with money is quite limited. We cannot
see the big part under the iceberg, we are not allowed to see it. There
is no doubt that artificial intelligence has a long way to go, but it
must be defended both in discourse, on the "street" and in the "legal
plane" that artificial intelligence is "the common heritage of
humanity", that even if its "creators" are companies, it is essentially
the product of knowledge and experiences from nature and the common
heritage of humanity (history), that it is "nourished" by these and that
it would be nothing without this source, that this source is anonymous
in the final analysis, and therefore it is imperative that artificial
intelligence be made as anonymous as possible and made available to all
people.
In summary; the development of artificial intelligence does not seem to
bode well for the future of "white-collar workers", that is, "mental
labor" within market mechanisms. However, we cannot overcome this with a
hollow rejection or naive acceptance of artificial intelligence. Our
problem is with the bosses and the state. On the one hand, we must be
prepared for (possible) layoffs and low wage policies in the current
order. On the other hand, we must defend the anonymization of artificial
intelligence until the end and its removal from the monopoly of
companies and states; because the development of artificial intelligence
works in parallel with presenting to "it" all the knowledge and
experiences we have acquired/learned from nature and history, that is,
"from within life", as the "common heritage" of human history.
Therefore, we must defend and ensure that the control of artificial
intelligence is in the hands of all of us, without leaving it to anyone,
neither to capital, nor to the state, nor to the "experts" who will
probably be determined by these two.
