Dear New Yorkers,
New York City officials are racing to scale back the use of National Guard members in migrant shelter operations ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The incoming president has promised to unleash the largest deportation campaign in the nation’s history. And his “border czar,” Tom Homan, has threatened New York and other so-called sanctuary cities that limit cooperation: “Don’t test us.”
Though Mayor Eric Adams says he hopes to meet with Homan, the mayor’s team is moving to get government troops away from immigrants vulnerable to deportation. Sources tell THE CITY that they are working to remove Guard members presently in shelters by early next year.
Advocates fear Trump could federalize the Guard, and use members working at city-sponsored shelters to round up migrants living there.
Asked Tuesday what level of cooperation his administration would offer to federal authorities seeking to deport people from New York City, Adams replied: “I would like to speak with our border czar and find out what his plans are, where our common grounds are.”

Our Other Top Stories
The number of unsheltered young people in the five boroughs has more than doubled since last year, according to an annual count by the city. This year, the Department of Youth and Community Development counted 418 young people between the ages of 14 and 24 sleeping in houses of worship, overnight drop in centers, the subways, fast food restaurants and other tenuous situations — the highest number in at least a decade.
Our newsroom gets lots of questions from readers. In recent months the most popular topic by far has been really trashy: New York City’s new programs requiring garbage to be put out on the curb in designated containers for collection. THE CITY’s readers have wondered: What happens if a new bin is stolen? Where should I put recycling now? And what’s up with just having one company supply the new official trash bin? Here are THE CITY’s answers to those questions, and many more.

Adams Likens Himself to Hunter
Mayor Adams, the self-professed “Biden of Brooklyn,” is now feeling more like Hunter.
Asked Tuesday about President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son, Adams read from the New York Times’ cover story: “President Biden and President-elect Donald Trump now agree on one thing. The Biden Justice Department has been politicized.”
“Does that sound familiar?,” he asked. “Rest my case.”
“I believe in fighting for my rights,” the mayor added. “And this is the hardest thing I've ever done in my entire life…. And I have to remain silent, and I can't answer and defend myself. That's the hardest thing.”
For months, the mayor has blasted the five-count indictment against him by federal prosecutors, alleging bribery and fraud, as payback for criticizing the Biden administration’s response to the influx of migrants to the city.
“I always knew that if I stood my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target — and a target I became,” he said in a video released in September.
Prosecutors have said the case against the mayor began before the asylum-seekers inundated the city.
Adams pleaded not guilty in September. His court date is set for April 21, 2025, just months before the Democratic primary.

THE KICKER: Roosevelt Island residents are petitioning the city for priority boarding on the tram. It is apparently so crammed with tourists that it sometimes resembles “a circus” or “a bad day at Disney,” residents told Gothamist.
