Dear New Yorkers,

Mayor Eric Adams is running for reelection in 2025 — while still facing federal corruption charges and investigations into his administration.

Could his campaign be denied public matching funds?

That will be decided as soon as Dec. 16, when the Campaign Finance Board votes on the first payments for the 2025 contest. “There will be some judgment calls made by the board,” the board’s executive director Paul Ryan told City Council members, while declining to mention Adams specifically.

But Councilmember Lincoln Restler, a Democrat from Brooklyn, still pushed on why the board would give Adams more money when so many questions linger about his past campaign — and a federal indictment that alleges he obtained $10 million in 2021 matching funds fraudulently.

“How can the CFB make determinations on future matching funds when there are so many outstanding concerns that a candidate may have from their previous campaign?” Restler asked.

Our Other Top Stories

  • The union representing thousands of New York’s public defenders, museum staff and academics endorsed a trio of left-leaning Democratic mayoral primary candidates yesterday — and explicitly called on its members to not rank Adams on their ballots. The candidates endorsed were Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani (D-Queens), City Comptroller Brad Lander and state Sen. Jessica Ramos (D-Queens). A union spokesperson characterized those candidates as “outspoken champions” with a clear “working-class agenda.”
  • New York City is extending the high school application deadline to Dec. 9, reports Chalkbeat. Officials discovered a glitch in a new tool that tells students their admissions chances — and while it only affected two schools (Millennium and NYC Lab School for Collaborative Studies) families said that it could have had ripple effects on their rankings.

A New Port Authority Bus Terminal

The federal government on Wednesday approved plans for a new $10 billion transportation hub to replace the decrepit Port Authority Bus Terminal, which opened in 1950.

The Federal Transit Administration’s decision came after an environmental review cleared the way for construction early next year on deck-overs above Dyer Avenue, which will allow for the new bus terminal to be built and also be used for staging buses during construction.

“We now have in hand all the needed permits to move forward with replacing the agency’s long-outdated bus terminal and enduring eyesore in the middle of Manhattan,” Rick Cotton, the Port Authority’s executive director, said in a statement.

The City Council last month approved a series of measures that set the stage for an overhaul of the world’s busiest bus terminal, which serves approximately 205,000 passengers and thousands of buses on weekdays.

The replacement will include a 2.1 million square-foot main terminal, an indoor atrium, new ramps connecting to the Lincoln Tunnel and more street-facing retail space.

The Port Authority said the work is expected to be done in phases, with the new main terminal completed by 2032.

Student Journos Demand Reports

Students testified at City Hall on Wednesday in support of a bill that would require the Department of Education to report on schools’ journalism offerings.

The bill, introduced by Councilmember Rita Joseph (D-Brooklyn), would require that the DOE submit an annual report on high schools’ journalism courses, clubs and publications. The report would be shared publicly and distributed to students.

For the students who testified, journalism offerings helped them gain confidence, learn media literacy, and explore social justice. “Being a student journalist is central to who I am,” said Liza Greenberg, a senior at Bronx Science.

Natalie Viderman, a junior in Manhattan, seemed surprised that there wasn’t already information available about schools’ journalism offerings: “The DOE reports basketball teams, but not publications.”

After Wednesday’s hearing, the bill can be scheduled for a vote.
