We know well that people who do not practice a sexuality that conforms
to the norms of capitalist and patriarchal society, that is to sayheterosexual, monogamous and family-oriented, have, even more than
elsewhere, enormous difficulty in remaining in rural areas and, when
they can, choose to leave for the city where it is easier to live away
from evil eyes. ---- The aim of rural prides in organizing a "pride of
the fields" was to remedy this state of affairs by making the
countryside more attractive to these people, and by allowing sexualities
not traditionally standardized by the dominant ideology to be visible as
naturally as possible, by breaking down prejudices and intolerances.
This is how, under the aegis of the mayor and numerous associations, a
pride has been organized since 2022 in Chenevelles to fight against
discrimination: from 400 people gathered the first year, more than 2,500
gathered on July 27 in this village of 500 inhabitants.
The cherry on the cake is that, not far away, on 23 and 24 August, the
queer feminist lesbian festival was held in Vicq-sur-Gartempe (700
inhabitants), again attended by over 2,500 people.
It should be noted that in both cases no incident spoiled the party. As
the mayor of Chenevelles says, "I am 52 years old, I have experienced
homophobia, shame and feeling abnormal. Being LGBT is not a choice. To
tell me that thanks to this march, young people from rural areas dare to
accept themselves without experiencing what I experienced, is that I
have won. It is true that in the countryside, the protest vote is
strong, but that does not mean that they embrace the ideas [More than
50% of voters voted RN in the last election]. During the festival, some
come out of curiosity. Farmers discover something they didn't know, or
that they saw on television. And it's often ignorance that's scary."
Puritans, Homophobes, followers of Christian morality like Retailleau
opposed to same-sex marriage or, like the mayor of the neighboring
village of La Bussière who refuses to celebrate gay marriages (no, no,
it's not because he is against marriage in general!) have not lifted a
finger as one might have expected if this kind of gathering had taken
place twenty years ago. Proof that there is a certain positive evolution
in this area and that a stubborn fight against discrimination and
moralism pays off. Proof also that reaction, fascists, rednecks and
other moralists have difficulty finding a space when determined people
stand in front of them, sure of their rights and proud of what they are.
These are many initiatives to multiply in these times when too many are
those who seem to be stunned by Trump's election.
However, there is obviously no reason to explode with joy yet!
Homophobia continues to strike everywhere every day, the State
legislates against people who declare themselves trans, abortion is
still problematic, proof that the right to freely dispose of one's body
with whom one wants, as one wants, when one wants is still to be
conquered. May country prides flourish everywhere in "our" countrysides!
