December 2023, the "Asylum and Immigration" law, known as the Darmanin
law, is passed in the Assembly with 349 votes in favor (the majorityvotes are joined by those of LR and RN) and 186 votes against, out of
573 voters[9]. This law, one of the most repressive of the last forty
years and which is nothing other than a summary of the measures of the
RN presidential program[10], announces a particularly beneficial year
for far-right movements in France. A look back at twelve months of an
uninhibited rise in reactionary ideas. ---- On the part of the
government first of all after the abject Darmanin law, it is the right
of the soil in Mayotte which is in the crosshairs of the Minister of the
Interior, taking up there a fetish measure of the extreme right[3]. The
fight against sexist and sexual violence, "great national cause" of
Macron's first five-year term, is also trampled: the time has come for
"demographic rearmament", to the great joy of reactionaries of all sides
and in particular of the slew of ministers former supporters of the
Manif pour tous.
In parliament
In March, a 370-page report on the "transidentification of minors" was
presented by LR senator Jacqueline Eustache-Brinio, known for her
uninhibited Islamophobia and opposed to the constitutionalization of
abortion. She also tabled a bill in the Senate to prohibit access to
care for trans people under 18. In the process, the RN filed a similar
one in the National Assembly in April. The LR senator's report actually
came from the Observatoire de la Petite Sirène, an organization opposed
to the rights of trans people, and set out fifteen "recommendations",
including the repeal of the Blanquer circular, gender binarity on forms,
and the "protection" of toilets.
The bill studied in the Senate in May includes the ban on prescribing
hormonal treatments before the age of 18 and the limitation of access to
puberty blockers[4]. But the high point of this year was undoubtedly the
European elections in June and the right-wing government that
laboriously resulted after an "Olympic truce" of almost two months.
In universities
Far-right ideas also find an echo in universities, through two "student
unions", the UNI and the Cocarde étudiante. During the Crous elections
in February, the Cocarde étudiante, created in 2015, was able to present
lists in half of the Crous. This student "union" notably demands
national priority in the allocation of Crous housing, in line with the
RN and Reconquête! While the Cocarde étudiante received few votes and
therefore no seats, the UNI managed to keep 11 seats. In addition to
election periods, the far right imposes itself physically in
universities, regularly attacking, among others, Solidaires étudiant-e-s
activists[5].
In the media
In recent years, we have witnessed the spread of far-right ideas
throughout society, even within the mainstream media. And we have also
seen a concentration in the hands of billionaire Vincent Bolloré who is
widely opening the platforms of his media - among others CNews, C8, the
JDD - to Éric Zemmour. The latest coup to date: the biography of Jordan
Bardella, released in early November by Fayard, a subsidiary of the
Hachette group bought by Bolloré in 2023[6].
These are the same media that delight in dramatic news items: the deaths
of Lola, Thomas or Philippine are blown out of proportion by the far
right with this nauseating press[7].
On the street
Carried by media hegemony, fascist street groups have maintained their
recurring attacks against members of the social movement and minority
people.
If the tactical failure of November 2023 in Romans-sur-Isère, following
the murder of Thomas, slowed down their desire to demonstrate force, few
weeks have passed in 2024 without a local vandalism, a racist attack, a
fascist provocation on the territory... even if, fortunately, they often
find themselves facing anti-fascist organizations and collectives.
Let's not give up, let's continue the fight
Fighting against the far right and its nauseating ideas is a constant
task, in our unions, in collectives (notably VISA, Vigilance and
anti-fascist union initiatives), in our activist press and everywhere we
live.
The struggle pays off: let us mention the success of the united
anti-fascist demonstration in Saint-Brieuc in April and the anti-fascist
village in Paris in May, on the fringes of a far-right demonstration. Or
the beautiful united mobilization of October 5 in Concarneau to " Disarm
Bolloré " bringing together, despite uncertain weather, nearly half a
thousand people. We can also collectively rejoice at the closure of the
" conservative and independent " bookstore Les Deux Cités in Nancy
after four years of existence [ 8 ] . New battles await us, let us be
ready to fight them together in the months to come.
