Workers at the telecommunications company Teleperformance, through the
decisions of their business unions, extended the 24-hour General Strikeof November 20, declaring a 48-hour strike on November 19 and 20. This
new strike mobilization is a continuation of the struggles and demands
of the workers in the call center factories, a struggle that has been in
constant motion for the last at least a year. More about their struggle
was brought to us by employees from the local branch of Teleperformance
in Thessaloniki, who recently introduced the 811 Initiative through
ferments in the also newly founded business union of Teleperformance
employees in Thessaloniki.
The goal of our newspaper is to host all those unguarded forces of the
labor movement and to give them the platform to be heard. Below will
follow a brief self-presentation of Initiative 811 as well as the
answers to the relevant questions asked by us, regarding the goals of
their strike mobilizations and the prospect of escalating their struggle.
What is the 811 Initiative?
The 811 Initiative is a multinational grouping of Teleperformance
employees in Thessaloniki that operates within the Local Branch of the
business union (SETEP), but also has autonomous action outside of it.
The purpose of the creation of the Initiative - which is also reflected
in its internal operation and organization, as reflected in its founding
text - was to promote and strengthen the basic procedures and
horizontality within the procedures of the newly-founded local branch of
SETEP and to prevent it from turning into a mere stamp or signature, a
mere name in some notice. In addition, we aspire to mass membership in
our Union and not allow opacity and bureaucracy to become the norm in
the way we operate and make decisions in our Local Branch, through the
continuous action of producing speech and addressing our colleagues in
the company, but at the same time keeping the powers that control the
Board of Directors. on alert.
What do you want to achieve through strike action?
Initiative 811: The goal of the Teleperformance workers' struggle is,
first and foremost, to succeed in securing the signature of a collective
labor agreement and indefinite-term contracts for all of us. The reality
in the company on this part today is the "circumvention" of labor
legislation (even the unacceptable existing one) with fixed-term
contracts of a few months through third-party payroll companies, which
are renewed until the moment Teleperformance decides that it is no
longer needed the employee. In addition, there are a number of other
demands regarding real wage increases, an end to the constant
redundancies/non-renewals and an improvement in our working conditions.
Finally, we are fighting to achieve the end of the "special status" that
applies to colleagues from countries outside the EU. (thousands in the
company and the soul of our struggle), who face the specter of
deportation if they are fired from the company, due to
(anti)-immigration laws of the Greek state.
What are your next moves to escalate the fight?
Initiative 811: We consider that the escalation of the struggle has
already been delayed in relation to the period when it was at its peak,
that is, at the beginning of the current year, when we had proceeded,
together with other colleagues in the sector, in consecutive strikes
mobilizations, which brought thousands of call center workers to the
streets and led to the creation of our business Union. The bureaucratic
logic that prevailed afterwards, the assignment of practically all the
negotiation with the company to a few elected representatives, with the
people normally back to their work, but also the handling of the
negotiation itself by those in charge, has make the prospect of
massification and scaling difficult, something we are called to overcome
collectively.
It is a commonplace for all of us that our company is getting into
trouble. We therefore believe that the time has come for some time to
proceed with strike mobilizations of longer duration, which, however, in
order to be successful, must be massive at the same time, while the
strategy behind their call must be common property of all of the
workers. Our Union, in its last meeting (10/11 when this answer was
written) decided to proceed with a 48-hour strike, as had been proposed
by several members of our union earlier, extending by one day (for
19/11) the already decided from the GSEE 24-hour strike of November 20.
For our part, as Initiative 811, we proceeded to communicate it in the
best possible way to our colleagues.
