Yes, we must finally recognize it, there really is a strong demand for
greater safety in society: safety at work, perhaps to avoid dying due toincreasingly unsafe working methods and increasingly high levels of
exploitation; safety in the right to health that is increasingly being
called into question today with the cuts perpetrated, not only by this
government, which reduce public services in favor of private healthcare;
safety in being able to have a roof over one's head because the right to
housing is a primary right for everyone; safety in an education that
allows all girls and boys, young women and men, the possibility of being
able to access a free public school; and finally safety for a world
where wars and climate devastation are the consequence of this
capitalist model that aims at the infinite exploitation of our planet's
resources and that accumulates wealth for a few and immense poverty for
a large part of the world's population.
These are the real emergencies that accompany us in everyday life and
that produce insecurity and poverty, but this government, obviously, in
its security obsession, unable to understand that in a truly free and
democratic society security should be the cure and the social
advancement of well-being, is all projected to proclaim new crimes and
provide for greater penalties against both those who should be protected
the most, namely the poorest, and against those who take charge of this
protection through conflictual and vindictive practices.
It is clear that at the base of this plan there is a vulgar propaganda
that arises from the intent to stir up hatred, point the finger at the
"loser" and reinforce the idea that only the "winner" is worthy of the
right: an idea, this, among other things, very popular in the twenty
years of fascism.
On the other hand, the Meloni government is unbeatable in terms of
propaganda, just think of what happened with the Italy-Albania protocol
affair and the recent deportation (because that's what it was) of 16
migrants, who then became 12 and were brought back to Italy the
following day. The government's initiative in this regard, which
according to the current narrative should have produced excellent
results in terms of fighting "human trafficking", has instead turned out
to be what it was, that is, an instrument for compressing people's
fundamental freedoms and rights, not to mention the waste of public
money for an operation that from the beginning was just pure and simple
propaganda and that would have been easily dismantled, as in fact
happened, by a court.
The government could not have been unaware of this, especially after the
ruling of the EU Court of Justice of 4/10/2024, nevertheless it still
wanted to violate European law, thus creating a formidable opportunity
to launch a violent attack on the judiciary and the constitution itself.
A very dangerous game, if you look at it from an institutional point of
view, but one that produces effects with respect to the narrative that
has accompanied this executive since its inception, according to which
there are powers that plot and conspire against the government's
actions, thus consolidating the idea that all those "reforms" that
strengthen the executive (the premiership) and limit the "interference
of the politicized judiciary" by questioning the independence of
magistrates with respect to the executive power (separation of careers)
are "necessary". A shift is taking place from the so-called social and
legal state to the state of rules and criminal law, and bill 1660 is the
perfect framework for this. From tomorrow, those considered socially
dangerous (young people, migrants, politically active, unionized, etc.)
will see their lives regimented in every aspect and sphere of public
life and not only (just think of the latest "gem" on gestation for
others as a universal crime), and even solidarity towards them becomes a
crime in all respects, while those who govern, hold economic levers or
specific properties, are increasingly exempted from any "obligation"
towards society.
The awareness of the danger of this law is finally growing in recent
times and the organization of protests and demonstrations in various
cities at the end of September, demonstrations such as those of October
5 and 19 in solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people and
for the freedom to fight, the proclamation of strikes by grassroots
unions, the mobilization decided by the Cgil, but also the decision
itself taken by the Union of Italian Criminal Chambers to abstain from
any judicial activity for the days of November 4, 5, 6 of this month,
foreshadow the possibility of a widespread uprising against the
prohibitions and restrictions that form this bill.
It is important and fundamental to spread awareness that the security
bill is not an exclusive problem of people who are active in political
and/or trade union organizations, it is in fact a plan of the entire
society and that it affects a broad spectrum, from workplaces to
schools, from public spaces to private, domestic and individual dimensions.
Only through this awareness will it be possible to build a strong,
grassroots opposition to this bill, but also against the other
authoritarian, liberticidal and militaristic measures that this
government would like to implement in a climate of armed peace.
