WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - THE CITY - Recycling: It’s easier than you think

Dear New Yorkers,

New Yorkers send a literal mountain of stuff — over 600,000 tons of material — to their curbsides to be recycled every year.

But that’s only about 17.5% of our total yearly waste stream, and about half of what we could be recycling.

The Department of Sanitation’s advice? It’s better to toss things in the recycling than be sorry.

“The only time that you know for sure your stuff is not getting recycled is when you put it in the trash,” said spokesperson Joshua Goodman “So if you're concerned about that, put it in the recycling and let us do our best.”

Here are the basics: separate paper from plastic, metal and glass. And if an item ends up in the wrong spot — don’t stress.

“Make your best guess,” said Goodman. “Let us handle the sorting.”

But what about things like greasy pizza boxes, milk cartons or vape pens?

Weather 🌧️

We might see a little snow in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s.

MTA 🚇

There’s no 6 train in the Bronx between Westchester Square and Pelham Bay Park from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find all the MTA’s planned changes and the latest delays here.

Alternate side parking 🚙

It’s suspended today, Jan. 28, for Lunar New Year’s Eve. 🐍🧧

By the way…

Snow and ice bring an unexpected hazard: manhole explosions.

Our Other Top Stories

  • Mayor Eric Adams cleared his public schedule this week for multiple doctor appointments and tests, with his office stating that he “hasn’t been feeling his best” but will still do his job. If the mayor becomes temporarily unable to serve, his first deputy mayor Maria Torres-Springer will fill in, the mayor’s team said, although the City Charter states that the public advocate assumes the roles of the mayor if he is sick. Asked about the apparent discrepancy, a spokesperson said it’s “because we’re just talking about this week. Not like he’s stepping down.”
  • On the latest episode of the FAQ NYC podcast, our hosts speak with Sally Goldenberg, Politico’s senior editor for New York, about our embattled mayor’s surprising health news, why Andrew Cuomo remains the candidate to beat, why Zohran Mamdani’s surge isn’t likely to continue without pushback, and much more. Listen here
  • Doctors in ten of the city’s public hospitals voted to approve a new contract with Health + Hospitals, their union announced on Monday. But a majority of physicians at three other H+H facilities rejected the deal, citing slashed appointment times and varying pay between doctors at different facilities. They’ll go back to the bargaining table.
