Please donate now Dear friends, Every day in the impoverished township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town, South Africa, dogs are hit by cars and left with excruciating injuries Many are so badly hurt they can hardly stand – some are so viciously wounded that they can’t even cry for help.  These townships are rife with social issues; unemployment is causing dire poverty, with the majority of households earning less than $215 (£173) per month. This meager income often has to cover the needs of at least three people; even the owners who do care about their pets can’t possibly afford the cost of emergency veterinary care. Credit: NFA/Luke Barritt In the midst of unimaginable poverty, our partner provides life-saving care for dogs who would otherwise die. At Network for Animals, we believe no injured dog should go untreated or suffer alone. That’s why we support a small veterinary clinic in Khayelitsha that is a lifeline for injured, abandoned and stray dogs in the community, offering heavily discounted services to destitute pet owners. Yet the clinic struggles every single day to pay for the specialized equipment needed to save broken bodies and shattered limbs.   Currently, the clinic desperately needs surgical pins – vital for mending bones of dogs struck by cars. A single operation to repair a fractured leg can cost $375 (£300).  The clinic relies on grants and donations to continue offering these crucial services – but with so many dogs in need, it’s not enough. In just one recent drive, 800 dogs were sterilized, sparing countless new puppies from being born into a dangerous world of pain and hunger. This heroic effort must continue, but funds are desperately short.   We have been supporting Mdzananda for years, and we are determined to help ensure that the team can keep on sterilizing vulnerable animals and saving critically-injured dogs.
