In a South African first, we worked with AfriPaw to develop a solution – a two-wheeled trailer powered by pedaling, fitted with a spacious cage for the animals, pulled by a bicycle. This unique ‘pet taxi’ has expanded our reach, enabling our team to provide crucial veterinary services to even more animals.
Our partners, AfriPaw and TEARS Animal Rescue, provide vital veterinary services to the area’s animals through a free clinic that helps hundreds of dogs and cats every month.
Locals are incentivized to bring their pets to the clinic through free food, collars and kennels, ensuring that many of the area’s dogs and cats receive regular deworming, tick and flea treatment, wound and disease care, vaccinations and sterilisations.
However, many residents and their pets face challenges in getting to the clinic – some roads are too narrow or are so riddled with potholes that cars can’t navigate them; some pets are too old, aggressive or anxious to make the journey; some owners have mobility issues of their own; and some people are too scared to cross gang lines in this often-violent area. |
