Read on blog or Reader Calais Migrant Solidarity COMMEMORACTION 2025 February 13, 2025 Retour sur le rassemblement calaisien [ENGLISH BELOW / العربية أدناه] Ce vendredi 8 février 2025 au soir, comme depuis plusieurs années, plus d'une centaine de personnes s'est rassemblée à Calais en réponse à l'appel international des Commemoraction.  11 ans après le terrible naufrage du 6 février 2014, des Commemoractions décentralisées ont été organisées dans plus de 50 lieux différents, avec la participation de milliers de personnes, au nord comme au sud de la Méditerranée.  Nous y avons présenté l'appel et cette date choisie par des familles endeuillées, d'un proche assassiné par le régime frontalier global, qui tue et continue de tuer en mer comme à terre. Nous avons pris un temps pour remonter la macabre année passée et rappeler les noms des 89 personnes tuées à la frontière franco-britannique, pour ne pas les laisser tomber dans l'oubli et renouveller notre soutien à leurs proches.  Tranchant avec la tristesse des décès bien trop récurrents ces derniers mois et des commémorations spontanées — au lendemain de l'annonce d'un décès dans la presse qui se succèdent violemment dans l'indifférence publique — les personnes rassemblées ont cette fois-ci choisi de faire du bruit, de crier et de chanter pour occuper l'espace public. Un cortège s'est formé depuis le parc Richelieu pour circuler avec motivation et rage dans le centre ville aseptisé et inhospitalier de Calais, sous le regard et quelques soutiens des passants. La déambulation s'est fait avec joie et colère, au son de percussions et de quelques lumières bien choisies pour ralentir sur la place d'armes et proche du commissariat, pour faire entendre notre colère et notre soutien avec toutes les personnes qui traversent les frontières et subissent les violences brutales et insidieuses des états européens, de leurs semblables serviles et de leurs prestataires privés.  Nous étions amers tout de même, car ces dernières semaines voient la répression policière redoubler dans les rues de Calais avec un grand nombre d'arrestations et d'enfermements arbitraires. Nombre de personnes sans papier n'étaient pas confiantes à l'idée de se joindre. Aussi, à cause des conditions de vie précaires dans cet hiver rude, les personnes qui ont fait le choix de saisir la rare opportunité de dormir au chaud dans le hangar du plan grand froid (PGF) n'ont pu se joindre au rassemblement à cause des conditions d'admission très restrictives en terme d'horaire. Cependant nous avons pu défiler nombreux.ses et bruyamment, pour finir par une cantine conviviale tous.tes ensemble. Se rassembler à Calais nous a paru d'autant plus important dans la période actuelle, de renforcement des pratiques et politiques xénophobes et racistes, de la montée de l'extrême droite et de la banalisation de sa présence dans nos rues, aussi parce que le mythe de l'Europe forteresse indispensable pour créer l'idée d'une menace de laquelle nous devrions avoir peur, cache mal les dizaines de mort.es, sous nos yeux. La violence des frontières n'est pas le propre des sous traitants lybiens, turcs ou marocains, si nos états se font passer pour des sauveurs – notamment dans la Manche — ils continuent de tuer avec hypocrisie et déni, celles et ceux qu'ils essaient de faire croire qu'ils protègent.  Se rassembler à Calais c'était rappeler que l'Europe n'est aucunement une destination paisible, que les parcours de migration sont structurés par un continum de violences impérialistes et racistes fabriquées par nos États. Les mêmes qui contraignent à partir, entravent, maltraitent et tuent jusqu'en leur sein. Voici les textes que nous avons lu pour inaugurer ce rassemblement :  Le 6 février 2014, plus de 200 personnes, parties des côtes marocaines, ont tenté d’accéder à la nage à la plage du Tarajal, dans l’enclave coloniale espagnole de Ceuta. Pour les empêcher d’arriver en « terre espagnole », la Guardia civil a utilisé du matériel anti-émeute, tandis que les militaires marocains présents ont laissé les personnes se noyer devant eux. Quinze corps ont été retrouvés côté espagnol, des dizaines d’autres ont disparu, les survivants ont été refoulés, certains ont péri côté marocain.  Depuis plus de trente ans, la violence directe ou indirecte du régime des frontières ne cesse de produire mort et disparitions le long des routes migratoires. Les naufrages se succèdent, avec la non-assistance et parfois la responsabilité active des gardes cotes et de Frontex. Le nombre de personnes disparaissant sans laisser de traces, en mer ou dans le désert, ne cesse d'augmenter. Et les activités de recherche et d'identification des corps de la part des autorités sont trop souvent expéditives et n'impliquent pas les familles touchées par ces deuils.  Depuis plus de trente ans, les familles et les proches, les associations, et toutes celles et ceux qui luttent pour un droit égal à la liberté de circulation, n'ont cessé de réclamer vérité et justice pour ces victimes, de souligner les responsabilités des politiques migratoires racistes, de travailler pour prouver ces responsabilités et pour soutenir les familles et les proches dans leur douloureux parcours de recherche des disparus et d'identification des victimes.  Depuis 11 ans, des personnes se rassemblent dans plusieurs pays du Sud et du Nord pour commémorer à une date commune toutes les victimes et les disparu.es sous le régime meurtrier des frontières. Aujourd'hui, à Calais, nous nous rassemblons pour la quatrième fois car la Manche est aussi concernée par les politiques racistes et meurtrières des gouvernements français et britanniques, dans la continuité des politiques européennes.  Chaque année depuis 1999, des personnes meurent et disparaissent à la frontière franco-britannique, dans l'indifférence générale. Chaque année, des familles pleurent leurs proches morts et disparus ici. Aujourd'hui nous voulons leur témoigner notre respect et notre admiration pour leur courage et leur détermination à obtenir la vérité et la justice sur ce qui leur est arrivé. Nous leur disons aujourd'hui que nous serons toujours à leurs côtés, pour les accompagner dans leurs démarches et faciliter le deuil de leurs proches. Nous nous mobiliserons toujours avec elles et eux jusqu'à ce que cessent ces crimes racistes et cette injustice.  Chaque année, des personnes sont enterrées dans le Nord de la France, ou rapatriées dans leur pays d'origine. En 2024, ce sont au moins 89 personnes qui ont perdu la vie ici à cette frontière. Aujourd'hui nous adressons nos pensées à toutes ces personnes, nous ne vous oublierons jamais. A toutes les personnes toujours portées disparues, nous continuerons à vous chercher jusqu'à ce que la vérité soit rendue.  Notre colère est grande et nous continuerons à honorer la mémoire de ces personnes.  Pas d'oubli, pas de pardon.  On connaît les responsables, et on vous voit !  Migrer pour vivre, pas pour mourir !  Ce sont des personnes, pas des chiffres !  Liberté de mouvement pour tous et toutes ! ________________________ This Friday evening, February 8, 2025, as for several years, more than a hundred people gathered in Calais in response to the international call for Commemorations. 11 years after the terrible shipwreck of February 6, 2014, decentralized Commemorations were organized in more than 50 different locations, with the participation of thousands of people, both north and south of the Mediterranean. The stroll was done with joy and anger, to the sound of percussions and a few well-chosen lights to slow down on the parade ground and near the police station, to make our anger and support heard with all the people who cross borders and suffer the brutal and insidious violence of European states, their servile peers and their private service providers. We were bitter all the same, because in recent weeks, police repression has increased in the streets of Calais with a large number of arrests and arbitrary detentions, many undocumented people were not confident about joining. Also, because of the precarious living conditions in this harsh winter, the people who chose to seize the rare opportunity to sleep warm in the hangar of the extreme cold plan (PGF) were unable to join the gathering because of the very restrictive admission conditions in terms of time. However, we were able to march in large numbers and noisily, ending with a friendly canteen all together. Gathering in Calais seemed all the more important to us in the current period, of the strengthening of xenophobic and racist practices and policies, of the rise of the extreme right and the trivialization of its presence in our streets, also because the myth of Fortress Europe, essential to create the idea of ​​a threat that we should be afraid of, poorly hides the dozens of deaths, before our eyes. Border violence is not the property of Libyan, Turkish or Moroccan subcontractors, if our states pretend to be saviors - especially in the Channel - they continue to kill with hypocrisy and denial those they try to make believe they are protecting. Gathering in Calais was a reminder that Europe is in no way a peaceful destination, that migration routes are structured by a continuum of imperialist and racist violence manufactured by our states. The same ones that force people to leave, hinder, mistreat and kill even within their own borders. Here are the texts we read to inaugurate this gathering: On February 6, 2014, over 200 people attempted to swim to Tarajal beach in the Spanish colonial enclave of Ceuta from the Moroccan coast. To prevent them from reaching “Spanish soil”, the Guardia Civil used riot gear, while the Moroccan soldiers present let the people drown in front of them. Fifteen bodies were found on the Spanish side, dozens more disappeared, the survivors were turned back, and some perished on the Moroccan side. For over thirty years, the direct or indirect violence of the border regime has continued to produce deaths and disappearances along the migratory routes. One shipwreck follows another, with the coast guards and Frontex failing to provide assistance and sometimes taking active responsibility. The number of people disappearing without a trace, at sea or in the desert, continues to rise. And the search and identification activities carried out by the authorities are all too often hasty and fail to involve the families affected by these bereavements. For more than thirty years, families and loved ones, associations and all those who fight for an equal right to freedom of movement, have not ceased to demand truth and justice for these victims, to underline the responsibilities of racist migration policies, to work to prove these responsibilities and to support families and loved ones in their painful journey of searching for the missing and identifying the victims. For the past 11 years, people have been gathering in various countries of the South and North to commemorate on a common date all the victims and the disappeared under the murderous regime of borders. Today, in Calais, we are gathering for the fourth time, because the Channel is also affected by the racist and murderous policies of the French and British governments, in the continuity of European policies. Every year since 1999, people have died and disappeared at the French-British border, in a climate of general indifference. Every year, families mourn their loved ones who have died or disappeared here. Today we wish to express our respect and admiration for their courage and determination to obtain truth and justice for what happened to them. We tell them today that we will always be at their side, to support them in their efforts and to ease the mourning of their loved ones. We will always stand by them until these racist crimes and injustices are brought to an end. Every year, people are buried in northern France, or repatriated to their countries of origin. In 2024, at least 89 people lost their lives here on this border. Today, our thoughts are with all these people, we will never forget you. To all those who are still missing, we will continue to search for you until the truth is known. Our anger is great and we will continue to honor the memory of these people.
