See online: to contact the collective ---- Since December 10, 2024, the
Collectif des Jeunes du Parc de Belleville has occupied the GaîtéLyrique, a cultural venue in the City of Paris. There are nearly 250
young people inside, which is almost all of the unaccompanied minors who
were sleeping outside just a few days ago. ---- Since December 10, 2024:
---- Tonight, there are 215 unaccompanied minors occupying the Gaîté
Lyrique to demand a roof over their heads. ---- As temperatures drop and
the police continue to dismantle our makeshift camps, we no longer want
to sleep in the streets of Paris and under the bridges of the Seine.
---- Yesterday, we called out to Madame Hidalgo during the "Mock Trial
of the Rights of the Seine", to remind her that hundreds of young people
are sleeping on its quays. Applauded by the entire room, this was not
enough to obtain a meeting with the Mayor, nor to obtain accommodation
solutions.
So today we entered the Gaîté Lyrique during a conference entitled
"Reinventing the reception of refugees in France", organized by the Red
Cross Foundation. Our occupation seeks to make this welcome effective
beyond words, as we have already shown on several occasions. Our actions
have allowed around 800 young people to be sheltered by the City of Paris.
This evening, the City Hall refused to contact us; we risk spending
several nights here. With more than 200 young people inside the place,
two pregnant women, an 18-month-old baby, without heating or meals for
tomorrow, the municipality's inaction is irresponsible.
If we don't have a solution tomorrow, the Gaîté Lyrique will become a
place of struggle. We call on all activists, unions, associations,
collectives, to come and join us to make our demands heard. As
International Migrants Day approaches, let's show that there are many of
us demanding a dignified welcome and equal rights.
We need as many people as possible tomorrow from 7:00 am in front of the
Gaîté Lyrique.
Spread this call and our kitty, help us hold out for the next few days,
join us.
Not one more night outside! Solidarity with all immigrants!
January 10, 2025 press release:
30th day of the occupation of the Gaîté Lyrique
We have waited all this time without receiving any answers from the City
Hall, and now, after a month, the Social Emergency Mission has agreed to
a formal meeting with the Collective. We hoped that this would be an
opportunity to discuss accommodation proposals, but that was not the
case. They came to explain to us where we can wash and eat, but above
all they informed us of the intention to launch legal eviction
proceedings at the Administrative Court, the arrival of a bailiff and a
count by the municipal police every day.
What a shame: where is the social action in all this? We knew where to
wash and eat even before they came and before the occupation of the
Gaîté Lyrique. Every evening the collective provides 350 meals, financed
with the solidarity fund. We don't want their hypocrisy: instead of
pretending to care about us, they could have offered us a dignified
solution. The good news is that today there are more than 300 of us
young people occupying this place: it is only thanks to the action and
determination of the Collective that almost all young people in Paris
are safe, even if it is in very harsh conditions.
Meanwhile, the various institutions, assessment centers, associations
like France Terre d'Asile direct young people to La Gaîté, the only
place where a minor on appeal can spend the night in safety. This proves
that nothing is organized for us, by a city hall that publicly
positioned itself against the immigration law on January 27, 2024 and
which refuses to implement a real reception policy. Unlike what is done
in Spain and Italy. So we wonder how the "social emergency mission" is
fulfilling its mission of finding a solution before the situation gets
worse and becomes even more urgent.
The town hall is thinking about an eviction procedure while we are
asking for protection. Every year, the town hall organizes a "Night of
Solidarity" to count the people sleeping on the streets. While they are
not looking for any real reception solution. They pretend to care about
them and help them, to cover themselves politically. Counting is not
welcoming. We are not cattle. We are fed up with all this. If the City
Hall does not agree with the racist policy of the State, it only has to
publicly oppose it and show that other ways of doing things are possible.
The Collective denounces and unmasks the hypocrisy of these
institutions, and for this purpose is organizing a demonstration on
Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 p.m., starting from the occupied Gaîté
Lyrique to the Hôtel de Ville.
To win, the collective needs support. We call on all those who have
understood the gravity of the situation and the need to confront racism
and fascism to mobilize with us in the days to come. Activists,
unionists, retirees, students, workers, unemployed, we are all concerned!
We demand:
-* Immediate accommodation for the 250 occupants of the Gaîté Lyrique;
May Mrs. Hidalgo and Mrs. Filoche show courage by standing by our side
to demand from the State the necessary means to take care of us;
May all left-wing forces participate in the fight against racism, for a
dignified reception system and equal rights for all
Join us every day at 6 p.m. in front of the Gaîté Lyrique, follow us on
social networks and contribute to our kitty.
