Three years ago, the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation
transformed the conflict that has been going on in the region since 2014into an all-out war. A war that has already caused hundreds of thousands
of deaths on both sides of the front. According to estimates provided by
the Wall Street Journal, the actual number of victims among the forces
of Kiev could be 80 thousand dead and about 400 thousand wounded, while
on the Russian side, according to a joint investigation by the BBC and
the independent portal Mediazona, as of January 24, 2025, the names of
at least 90,019 Russian soldiers who died since the beginning of the
invasion have been identified. However, the real extent of the losses
could be much higher: estimates vary between 138,500 and 200 thousand
fallen.
Support for the war has already cost the Italian state almost 20 million
euros, between direct funding and contributions to the European fund to
support the government of Kiev, the so-called European instrument for
peace; of this mass of funding only 440 million are earmarked for
humanitarian aid, the rest goes to weapons and financial support. A
godsend for the cronies of the Minister of War Crosetto. Meanwhile, in
February the inclusion check, intended to alleviate the conditions of
the poorest people, will not be recharged.
With missions abroad, thousands of Italian soldiers and hundreds of
vehicles are deployed in Eastern Europe. NATO has deployed over 40
thousand people, together with significant air and naval means in the
eastern part of the Alliance; Italy is present with its own troops in
Bulgaria and Hungary. While always on the eastern front the Italian Air
Force is participating in the Assurance Measures operation.
The policy of sanctions is having an impact on the economic situation in
Europe: for two years German production has not grown and shows no signs
of improvement, unemployment in November reached 6.1% with a constant
growth in the last two years. The reasons are easily found in the
increase in energy prices and the closure of commercial outlets in
Russia, a result of the sanctions policy.
The economic crisis in Germany is having repercussions in Italy:
industrial production has been declining for 22 months, while the latest
sanctions package approved by Biden and Kiev's decision to no longer
allow Russian gas to transit through Ukrainian territory will result in
a general increase in the cost of living, both due to higher bills and
increased production and transport costs.
Meanwhile, Russians and Ukrainians can no longer stand the war: draft
evasion and desertion are rampant, as we have repeatedly witnessed on
these pages and again in this issue.
The superpowers are marching towards war, and the Italian government is
following suit. The Prime Minister talks about deterrence and
competitiveness, she does not want Italy to be left behind in the
carnage that is being prepared.
Let us counter the political and military competition between
governments with internationalist solidarity between the exploited
classes of each country.
Let us take to the streets on February 24th against all wars, in
Ukraine, in Palestine, in Congo, in every corner of the world.
Let us build a vast antimilitarist movement that imposes on the
government the immediate withdrawal of military missions abroad, the end
of agreements with bloodthirsty and warmongering dictators, the use of
funds destined for the construction of new bases and training grounds
for health and education. Direct action against war, solidarity with
deserters on every front.
