The ashes of Nick Sacco and Bart Vanzetti have always been fantasized
about, most of the time inappropriately, narrating the most incrediblestories about their preservation, their return to Italy, their uncertain
and varied mixtures, transforming them into an object of worship and
even morbid curiosity. Their story - which is rigorously reconstructed
in the pages of this book, using certain, unpublished and probative
documentation - is instead, in the turmoil linked to the dramatic story
of the two Italian anarchists, quite clear and linear, even marked by
the presence of notarial documents. After the cremation on August 29,
1927 and the initial adventurous preservation by the undertaker who
handled the funeral (first deposited in his company's safe and then in a
bank vault), the two urns - for a purely practical reason - were
divided: two vases destined for Italy and two others to be placed in a
funeral monument in the United States. This was the situation at the
time of Luigina Vanzetti's return voyage by ship, who took care of
getting half of her brother's remains to Villafalletto and those of
Nicola to Torremaggiore. The other two halves, awaiting the construction
of a cenotaph, were taken care of by Rosa Sacco and kept at her home.
Those of her husband remained there until the end of his days and all
trace of them was lost. Those of Bartolomeo, instead, after three years,
waiting to be brought to Italy, will be hosted at the home of Alfonsina
Brini, who will keep them for thirty-six years, until Aldino Felicani
will collect them to send them to his printing house in Boston, where
they will remain until 1979, the year in which, together with the entire
archive of the Defense Committee, they will be donated to the Boston
Public Library, where they are still located today.
