The manifesto of the Frentes Brasil Popular and Povo Sem Medo,
expressing solidarity with the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, disregards and disqualifies in an unacceptable manner the struggle of
the institute's workers against measures that threaten the public and
independent essence of the institution. Classifying as "opportunists"
and "corporatists" the employees who have dedicated themselves for
decades to building an IBGE recognized for its excellence is an unfair
and disproportionate attack, in addition to reinforcing Pochmann's own
anti-union practices.
Marcio Pochmann's administration, far from representing a "collective
commitment" to popular values, making use of his academic career that
debates workers' rights, has been characterized by authoritarianism and
a lack of dialogue. The creation of the IBGE+ Foundation and the
revocation of teleworking are examples of decisions made without any
consultation or debate with employees, demonstrating contempt for
internal bodies and for the historical role of workers and their union,
ASSIBGE, in strengthening the institute. The creation of the public
foundation under private law IBGE+ represents steps towards the
privatization and commodification of public knowledge, prioritizing the
interests of capital over the needs of the working people. In addition,
the management attacks the union of the category, and more recently
notified the entity to change its name, removing the acronym IBGE.
It is essential to defend the interests of workers independently of
class, without subordination to governments that, regardless of their
party, continue to defend the interests of the bosses. The Lula-Alckmin
government continues with neoliberal policies and uses the polarization
within the bourgeois parliament to justify measures that maintain the
logic of class conciliation, deepening contradictions and harming workers.
The defense of a public, transparent IBGE committed to producing quality
data for the formulation of public policies cannot be confused with
corporate interests. On the contrary, it is an essential fight to ensure
that the agency maintains its integrity and continues to serve the
Brazilian people. The battle is against initiatives that could result in
the expansion of precariousness and the privatization of one of the
fundamental institutions for collecting data on the economic, social and
cultural reality of our people.
To the movements that subscribe to the manifesto in solidarity with
Pochmann, it is necessary to remember that the true commitment to
inclusion and social justice begins with respect for workers,
independence in the class struggle and the strengthening of democratic
spaces for organization and union struggle. Solidarity with managers,
whoever they may be, cannot mean silencing legitimate criticism from the
base.
We repudiate the old tactic of the left-wing bureaucracy of, when in
government, associating any struggle and legitimate criticism of its
actions with the right. The "lesser evil" policy does not end with
elections, but expands to all areas of social struggle. A government
that implements policies aligned with the interests of the ruling
classes and silences the voice of the organized working class betrays
the fundamental principles of emancipation and social justice.
The IBGE, as a public institution, must be an instrument of the people
and for the people, and not of the economic elites or the technocratic
managers who represent them. The defense of its public and democratic
character is inseparable from the struggle to build a socialist society,
where knowledge and production are at the service of collective
liberation, and not of capital accumulation.
