Respite for the bustard and water in Poitou ---- For a few weeks now,
the members of the Association for the Protection, Information and Studyof Water and its Environment (APIEEE) in Chizé in Deux-Sèvres must be
happy. ---- Since 2013 - at a time when not a single rebel was
interested in it - it was with the local France Nature Environnement
(FNE) at the origin of the protest against the religion of "substitution
reserves" which were not yet called megabasins in Poitou. ---- This
association has been - like the others - largely invisible following the
leap of the Leninists of the bocage on the struggle in Sainte-Soline.
She did not participate in the organization of the October 2022
demonstration, but publicly reiterated her support for the anti-basin
movement and denounced the repression.
Without further ado: "On November 25, 2022, the Regional Academic
Delegation for Youth, Engagement and Sports (DRAJES)..." (1) suspended
the subsidy allocated to the association for educational activities in
schools, with retroactive effect to October 29 (date of the demonstration).
In February 2023, the Deux-Sèvres prefecture informed her "of its
exclusion from the Water Resources Committee, departmental water
conferences and all technical working groups dedicated to the management
of water resources in the department...".
In short, a rapid and effective application of the "separatism law" and
the "Republican Commitment Contract" that all associations receiving
public funding must sign.
The tricardized APIEEE must be even more than happy, happy because with
a dozen nature protection associations, it has just had 4 basins
including that of Sainte-Soline declared provisionally illegal by the
administrative court of appeal of Bordeaux. (see article "Highs and
lows", in this issue) These "substitution reserves" threaten the
survival of the little bustard, an endangered species living in the
plains and steppes. (2)
This little slap against the bad smells emanating from the Prefecture
and the Coop de l'eau 79, is good news and, Julien Le Guet, spokesperson
for "Bassines, non merci", sees it as confirmation "... that we must
adopt a diversity of tactics... We hope that this will prevent other
project leaders from getting involved elsewhere in France." (3)
However, this is only a fragile respite. The basins are suspended and
not cancelled and, if an authorisation to destroy a protected species is
granted, the bustard will go and get lost elsewhere. It will always be
able to emigrate to the steppes of Arabia where it will be able to
replace - as a true undocumented worker - one of its cousins who is
being fiercely hunted there by the local potentates of fossil capitalism.
The administrative judges have also, in their kindness, authorised the
agro-thirsty people to pump the water currently stored in Sainte-Soline
(we mustn't waste it, after all), without however authorising them to
fill it up again. We'll see...
In addition, the judgment limited to protected species still does not
take into account the deterioration in the quality and quantity of
water, which are nevertheless amply documented and which are at the
heart of the protest and demands (To bouère, to bouère!) of the
agro-thirsty people.
Caussade Dam: The Eternal Return
CA was one of the rare activist newspapers to address the absolute
scandal that is this dam illegally built by the fascists of the Rural
Coordination who run the Chamber of Agriculture of Lot-et-Garonne.
For 6 years, the dam has been there despite the prefectural decrees for
its removal and the restoration of the site, the threats of financial
penalties and the conviction in 2022 of the president of the Chamber of
Agriculture, Bousquet-Cassagne...
It's back to square one in December 2024 with the Prefect who draws a
new decree taking up the same arguments and threats.
In short, a ritual agitation that makes Bousquet-Cassagne laugh,
threatening the prefect with "civil war, I weigh my words" (4) and
distressing the FNE lawyer because "The State is making an order all by
itself in its corner, which will not be respected, just like the
previous ones, making recommendations that farmers will not follow,
threatening to charge fines when the previous ones were not requested."
Great bureaucratic-political art: the State gives the illusion of action
and tries to cover itself, the CR shows off its mechanization because it
risks nothing, and everything continues as before.
As for the locals, the fauna and the flora, let them continue to stick
their tongues out. And, if the rotten barrier of poor workmanship
cracks, who is going to suffer?
Demeter, what are you for?
In December 2024, Vertement Écolo reported on the big return of the
gendarmes' Déméter cell against so-called "agribashing".
The Aria association managed to obtain from 10 prefectures of the Grand
Ouest the report of the actions of the cell. It's nib, nothing, nada! No
meetings of the dedicated observatory, either. No comment at the
national gendarmerie and the LR deputy Xavier Breton - author of a
report in January 2021 on the odious acts committed against hunters,
farmers and breeders by the ecologists - is also absent. All that for
that, you will say.
Finally, Déméter seems to be, on the one hand, a state operation of
cuddle therapy and electoral promotion for the FNSEA and, on the other
hand, a sneaky strategy of insecurity, surveillance, harassment and
intimidation of opponents of industrial agriculture. It could always be
useful to the blues and the State for the future of the policing of
populations who are agitating in the peripheries.
AI, AI...AI that's it, we have to nuclearize
Statement:
Knowing that a query on a classic search engine followed by a visit to a
site emits (depending on the calculation methods) 7 to 20 grams of CO2 (5),
Knowing that a search engine "boosted" with generative AI (6) would
consume 30 times more energy than a classic search engine,
Knowing that "data centers, cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence
represent almost 2% of global electricity consumption in 2022, or an
electricity consumption of 460 TWh. In comparison, French electricity
consumption amounted to 445 TWh in 2023" (7),
Knowing that Micro$oft, in order to continue to maintain its dominant
position and develop, must impose ChatGPT in its Bing search engine, its
Edge browser, its Office suite and all possible applications and uses,
Knowing that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a UN agency,
the supreme lobby of nuclearocrats, has declared that nuclear power is a
decarbonized energy enabling "the transition to clean energy" (8),
Knowing that Micro$oft must, for legal and financial reasons, reduce its
carbon footprint which has exploded with the recent and massive use of
AI (up 29.1% in 2023 compared to 2022),
Question:
How does Micro$oft intend to get the best price on an ultra-competitive
market without breaking its carbon credit piggy bank or jeopardizing the
shareholder dividends?
Answer:
Well, well, the solution is as simple as pie: buy a nuclear reactor!
Where? In the United States and very precisely at Three Mile Island, a
power plant known worldwide for a super nuclear accident that occurred
in 1979. This led to the partial meltdown of the core of a reactor and
also marked the end of the American nuclear program (private insurers
having decided to withdraw from the nuclear market: too unprofitable and
expensive).
Restarted in 1985 despite the opposition of local populations, the power
plant, which was in deficit, was shut down in 2019. Thanks to Micro$oft
it could restart in 2028. And thank you again for this sexy solution for
shareholders, local employment and in line with the radioactive
decarbonization objectives of industries and services.
We are burning with impatience, especially since a few other projects -
Amazon's data center next to the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in
Pennsylvania, Oracle's powered by three small private modular reactors -
like the nuisances of the monstrous bitcoin mining farm installed in
Grantbury (Texas): "power cuts,... hearing loss and other disorders
related to the hum of the machines") (9) - augur a future of radiant
pollution for the United States. Fortunately, they are not the only ones
because Elon Trump is rediscovering the good old reflexes of the old but
effective diplomacy with a club (10). The orange man, agent orange of
capitalist destruction, is unleashed: I want and demand Canada,
Greenland, the Panama Canal, to access cheap uranium and strategic
metals intended to feed the US techno-capitalist ogre, to ensure the
security of the corresponding naval communication routes and to drive
Russians, Chinese and Europeans from what is due to great America.
Our near future with Donald Musk is therefore likely to be joyfully
imperialist, militarist, terrorist and polluted to better serve protean
digital capitalism, that of nuclear, mining, energy... and the criminal
will to power of the leaders.
Plastics in the meadows, bloom, bloom... plastics in the meadows, it's
the end of summer...
Plastic waste, sustainable by-products of oil capitalism are everywhere.
Their presence in two of the three elements of the biotope (these are
the physicochemical supports essential to life on Earth) is widely
documented and publicized.
They are therefore found in all salt water (on the surface with the
"plastic continent" of the Sargasso Sea and at the bottom of the oceans
and its plastic porridge) as well as fresh water (wild or captured) and
in the air we breathe.
Mechanically, by ingestion and respiration, they colonize all living
species in the form of micro-plastics (from 5 mm to a few hundred
nanometers) with their multiple health and ecological consequences. Too
bad for mussels, oysters, seagulls, rats, bears, calves, cows, pigs,
broods and humans (although, for them, it is a return to sender).
But strangely enough, the third element of the biotope, the soil, seemed
to escape the curse of the great planetary plastic pollution.
Fortunately, the publication of the recent ADEME report (11) - ADEME,
which the agro-poisoners and politicians who are trying to stay in power
want to eliminate - repairs this unfortunate oversight and the soil
joins the common lot of global poisoning.
The presence of plastic waste "is almost systematic" (75% of the samples
studied) in all cultivated areas: meadows, vineyards, crops and
orchards. Forests also contain some but less. It is mainly polyethylene
and 70% of these particles measure less than 2 mm.
In this discreet disaster, organic waste from cities and agriculture
plays an extremely important role. "Sludge from sewage treatment plants,
green waste, various composts including those from mechanical-biological
sorting (TMB) of residual household waste, various digestates and
livestock and agricultural effluents" massively pollute the soil.
Among these, TBM waste is the most polluting because, in France, unlike
other countries, "TMB was initially developed to produce compost" (12)
and, as the sorting performance of these plants is very, very poor, the
result is astonishing.
We find again the infernal system of Poubellocene capitalism: massive
production of polluting waste that must be eliminated or we will die
from their accumulation. But since all this is expensive, it is more
economical to sweep it under the carpet.
The carpet is the soil and the ideal soil is the soil of agricultural
lands stuffed with fertilizers and which are supposed to feed us.
We are therefore developing techniques, tools, sectors and legislation
to use this new windfall.
Triple benefit: communities get rid of their waste, the agricultural
world reduces its production costs (less use of chemical fertilizers and
the supply of very low-cost organic fertilizers) and everyone welcomes
these increasingly green and virtuous practices.
Problem: these fertilizers containing plastics, pesticides, fertilizers,
drug residues, pathogenic microbes pollute the soil and this pollution
ends up peacefully in the plant and animal production that we feed on.
The fact remains that the neglect of the fate of soils (too often
reduced to agricultural land, the ones that bring in money) raises
questions.
Soils are unconsciously devalued and despised: "the soil is opaque, you
can't see through it" (13) unlike air and water, it is "dirty in modern
Western culture... because we bury excrement, waste... the dead there".
It "soils" shoes and clothes. If heaven is in the skies, hell is
underground... We have been walking on it for so long that it has become
invisible (unconscious domination in addition?). And "most of the time
in everyday language, the word mainly designates a surface: we say
"placed on the ground, fallen to the ground".
However, the ground exists in three dimensions, (and even four over
time) like its two other counterparts and life can only exist on this
planet through permanent interactions between the three elements of the
biotope, between themselves and with all living things (the biocenosis).
