After the creation of the red zones and the impunity for the guards who
beat up prisoners ten against one, here we are at the third act of theauthoritarian involution that is affecting our city. ---- For a couple
of weeks now, proclamations have been circulating from racist and
fascist groups who want to take to the streets to "take back the city".
A city that, after the fall of the regime eighty years ago, has never
been theirs, and in reality not even before. So what do they want to
take back? The suspicion is that they want to accredit themselves not so
much as the fascists that they are, but as "good Italians" who must act
against degradation and take back Reggio from the hands of who knows
what forces of evil. Which, mind you, are not the organizations that
have made Reggio a crossroads of illicit trafficking and financial
crimes, but people who are part of marginalized social groups, usually
migrants or people who are considered "other" with respect to racist
stereotypes of "Italianness". For "white boys" and the "patriots'
network" these are the problem of Reggio and Italy. Not the starvation
wages, skyrocketing rents, the collapse of public health and education,
workplace murders, gender violence, public spending shifted from social
services to weapons. No, the problem is drug dealers and street thugs.
Moreover, reading the news, the people checked by the police in the red
zones are more than a thousand and those removed are just sixteen, so
the "degradation" is nothing but a pretext. The point is that an
authoritarian culture is spreading more and more, which does not seek to
resolve the causes of poverty and social distress, but simply addresses
them in repressive terms with security legislation aimed at stopping
social and opposition movements. For this culture, one must feel fear
and disgust for the poor, not for poverty. This government is
accelerating the security measures already taken by previous
governments, of any political persuasion. War and repression of social
movements are not the prerogative of the right, quite the opposite.
External war, with dozens of military missions abroad and with the
production and international trafficking of weapons. Internal war, with
soldiers returning from missions used as public order in our cities. War
waged with the militarization of the territory, with preventive
repressive operations against any form of opposition, against anyone who
is a potential antagonist of the government and capital, against those
who disturb the urban "decorum".
The fascists, who are certainly not the "historical" ones but still
fascists, are one of the means that power uses to exercise provocation
and violence towards the poor, workers, migrants, non-conformists and
movements. Their logic of domination and authoritarianism is the same as
the government.
We want a welcoming city, that gives a supportive response to social and
cultural problems, that rejects every form of fascism, militarism and
authoritarianism. We demand an anti-fascist and, therefore, anti-racist
and anti-sexist city and culture; a city that does not criminalize those
forced to its margins, to the impossible paths to request asylum,
residence permits or citizenship and to have work and housing, but that
is based on hospitality and social justice.
We do not know what to do with their superficial decorum. Human dignity
and solidarity are the only decorum in which we recognize ourselves. The
Resistance has taught us that anti-fascism is done from below, spreading
logics of solidarity: for this reason we must mobilize against the
fascist rally of March 30.
In Reggio Emilia, as elsewhere, there is no room for fascists. Not now,
not ever.
