The demonstrations of February 15 in Milan and Rome, in support of the
confederal revolution and for the liberation of Ocalan, marked animportant moment of mobilization, in fact they took place while
negotiations were underway between the Turkish state and the Kurdish
leadership for a peaceful turning point in the war that pits Turkey
against the Kurdish Liberation Movement. ---- A conflict that from a
struggle for national liberation with the claim of a Kurdish state, has
transformed into a social construction that has rejected the state and
national concept, aiming at the creation of a human community based on
the values of equality, solidarity and freedom where relationships
between women and men live in a daily life of complete equality.
A new life that is practiced in the territories of Northern Syria, with
a form of self-government that rejects the state form. Social reality
that from the very beginning lived in a situation of war, clashing with
the political Islam of ISIS and with the Muslim Brotherhood represented
by Turkey and with a very tense relationship with the Shiite militias
that came to support the Assad regime, in an anti-jihadist function.
The experience of Democratic Confederalism, during the confrontation
with fundamentalism, had to deal with the fake US alliance and with the
Russian and Iranian military presence, which came to support the Syrian
dictatorship, with a Turkey that played on its own, politically juggling
between the Americans and Russians while in its own metropolitan
territory it militarily attacked the Kurdish municipalities, devastating
them, killing civilians and imprisoning political militants.
As can be seen, the struggle and the revolution were attacked from many
sides; with the fall of the Syrian regime, an even newer phase opened up
where the achievements implemented up to now by the Kurds can be questioned.
The Middle Eastern picture since October 7th has been turned upside down
by the war unleashed by the state of Israel in response to the military
action carried out by the Palestinian resistance against Israeli
civilians and soldiers within its national borders. Action that was not
only an act of response to the continuous Israeli violence but which
represented, in our opinion, the opening of the second front of the
world war after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia bringing devastation
and death to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and the invasion of
Lebanon and the Golan Heights in Syria.
It is clear that in this present of War the Kurdish cause and the Rojava
revolution are at a turning point. The international mobilizations and
the Italian marches must be placed within this narrative. Just as this
article goes to press we learn of a statement by Ocalan calling on the
Kurdish Workers' Party to end the armed struggle and to dissolve and
announcing the undertaking of legal political action within Turkish society.
Surely the negotiations underway between Turkey and the Kurds respond to
similar needs, but also different ones. It is clear that these are the
considerations of the writer, then we will have to deal with the real facts.
But let's try to say something; surely more than forty years of armed
confrontation weigh on both sides, Erdogan if he is to be re-elected
must bring an important result within his own country and a pacification
with the Kurds in the metropolitan territory would be a very important
result. For their part, the Kurds have only internationalist solidarity,
but they certainly do not enjoy any support within the imperialist
groups that are at war at this moment; a pacification with the Turkish
state could guarantee a certain tranquility to the territories of
Democratic Confederalism.
We will see if Erdogan will stick to the agreements, within an
international scenario in these hours shaken by the oligarchic
capitalism of the new US administration, which is rewriting the new
international strategies, and a new political agenda that sees a vision
of global power that does not allow discussion but only a sudden submission.
Even more difficult times await us, in which democracies have had their
day, where the charisma and arrogance of strong men in command tell us
that autocratic forms of political organization are the only possible
ones, where technology is more important than the human and war is a
possible constant.
It is our task and duty to overturn this near future, supporting the
Kurds, the Palestinians and all those who do not bow to the masters of
the world, the deserters of all wars, overturning the future of our
Sicily, of our Italy, of ourselves.
