As a journalist, even before being an anarchist, I have never been
passionate about political reporting and I have carefully avoideddealing with it in the more than ten years that I have been doing this
job. Political reporting in Italy is a constant chatter, where the
mediating role of the writer is reduced to the interpretation of half
sentences and half gestures. More than a journalist, it is a matter of
being a fortune teller. Having to deal with people who believe they are
the center of the world because every now and then they convince someone
to vote for them, and therefore believe they can decide the lives of all
people, is truly mortifying. I have always looked with a mixture of
horror and embarrassment at those who buy Bruno Vespa's books or are
passionate about the behind-the-scenes stories of paper newspapers.
There is enough truth in these texts, one or many, to be searched for
with a microscope. For this reason I approached with curiosity the book
"Fratelli di chat", written by the journalist of Il Fatto Quotidiano
Giacomo Salvini and recently published by the publishing house Paper
First. Salvini, not to be confused with the wicked minister of the
Northern League, had access to the internal chats on which the
parliamentarians and ministers of Fratelli d'Italia communicated from
the end of 2017 to the end of 2024, the party that in this period has
been the protagonist of an resistible electoral rise and since 2022 has
led a fascist government that threatens to last. They are private
conversations and that restore a little sincerity of what those in power
really think. Let's be clear: the book doesn't have any great scoop,
they are still the conversations of people who aim to secure a slice of
power or to show complacency, not even here do we really have what the
affiliates of FdI think, it is still a set-up but where at least there
is a bit of passion, a bit of pathos, and from here some spark of truth
emerges. And yet this material is enough to have another version of the
party heir of the Italian Social Movement and National Alliance. A party
that gained power first and foremost through an embarrassing "level of
opportunism and hypocrisy", as the journalist Marco Travaglio defines it
in the preface. Most of the chats are all here: what is said publicly is
never what is thought. Nothing different, let's be clear, from other
parties, because those who lend themselves to the electoral farce have
long since accepted the absolute improbability of proclamations and
promises. But Fratelli d'Italia in this sense, according to what emerges
from the chats, has taken a step further. Because hypocrisy is the
linchpin on which the right-wing alliance led by FdI stands. For
goodness sake, it is clear that the three parties in government today
are together only to intoxicate themselves with the magical essence of
power, but it still has a certain effect to read the insults to the ally
Matteo Salvini ("bimbominkia", "cialtrone", "drunkard"), with the
precise strategy of stealing votes over the years, who is also
criticized for his cosplay period, when he wore police uniforms even to
go to the toilet; or the criticisms of the President of the European
Commission Ursula von der Leyen, with whom Meloni now pretends to get
along. Hypocrisy in the party rhymes with opportunism: the order that
rains down over and over again from above, almost always from the very
high mother Giorgia, is to keep quiet, omit, hide. Never reveal your
positions, otherwise you lose votes. And this warning is valid in all
circumstances: during an election campaign and even when you are in
power. It happens for example with the war in Ukraine, where in the
chats the awareness of the harmful effects of the conflict on people
emerges and at the same time the awareness that you cannot disappoint
the Yankee master. What to do? Simple, don't talk about it. It also
happens with environmental issues: from drilling to nuclear power, as
the author Giacomo Salvini writes, "the communication line" is one in
which you "candidly admit to making fun of the voters". A 2022 message
by Marco Marsilio, one of Giorgia Meloni's darlings, put to govern
Abruzzo, explains it well. "Some solutions must be done but not
announced (...) Certain things are done after the elections (..) having
had time to also rain down the benefits and economic compensation for
the territories". A message that also exudes the usual arrogance of
power, which considers benefits as handouts to appease those who live in
the territories and must endure impactful projects. The same thing
happens with fascism, where a relationship with the Duce emerges, at
least on the part of Giorgia Meloni, which if possible is even more
horrifying than that of her comrades. Because at least the latter
believe in fascist bullshit, while the prime minister is a pure
calculator, who winks and does not deny for electoral convenience, "to
smooth the fur of the nostalgic" as Salvini rightly writes. Emblematic
in this sense is the candidacy in 2019 of Caio Giulio Cesare Mussolini
in the European elections: Meloni explains to her people that with him
"you won't lose votes to the right". And then at the same time she
warns: you should never talk about fascism, instead you should use the
word extremism. Puerile tactics that apparently work. This is associated
with the suffocating climate of permanent conspiracy that also emerges
from the internal chats of Fratelli d'Italia: they see enemies
everywhere, even among their own, as in the case of the Forza Nuova
assault on the CGIL headquarters in 2021, when some leaders accuse
institutions and police forces of "doing nothing against Forza Nuova
just to discredit Fratelli d'Italia". Finally, to add further spice,
there is the adoration for that madman Donald Trump. Not only does
Giorgia Meloni in her chats with her supporters show that she believes
in the bullshit of electoral fraud in the 2020 US elections, but she
goes further, claiming that the assault on the Capitol in 2021 by the
followers of the US president would actually be carried out by
"infiltrators sent by the American left, to then accuse the right". If
they weren't dangerous, we would have already buried them with a few
farts. What a shitty life people in power must lead.
