11,000 Dogs. 3,000 Donkeys. Join Us to Keep Them Alive

Dear friends,

In the gold-mining hills of Bukombe and the narrow alleyways of Stone Town, a silent crisis is unfolding. Donkeys collapse under the strain of overloaded carts. Stray dogs covered in mange limp through garbage-littered streets, their skin raw and their stomachs empty. These are the forgotten animals of Tanzania and Zanzibar—beasts of burden and companions alike—left to suffer in the shadows of poverty and neglect.

While major international funders like USAID often focus on broader economic development or disease control, the reality on the ground is stark: the animals, whose suffering mirrors the struggle of the communities they serve, are largely overlooked. And yet they are essential. Donkeys pull water, firewood, and bricks for families with no other means. Dogs guard homes and livestock. When they fall ill, it isn’t just the animals who suffer—it’s the people who rely on them.

But now, hope is arriving in the form of a powerful partnership.

A Lifeline Through Unity: Animals First Aid x TAHUCHA

Animals First Aid is proud to announce our new collaboration with Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA)—a grassroots, government-compliant NGO born from compassion and powered by local resolve. Founded by Sr. Johnmary and coordinated by Richard Patrick Itaba, TAHUCHA has been working tirelessly to treat suffering animals and educate communities about humane practices in both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Together, AFA and TAHUCHA are launching a new chapter for animal welfare in the region. But we can’t do it without your help.

The Cost of Care—and of Doing Nothing

$7,500 (approx. €6,960 / £5,950) is needed for our Donkey Welfare Initiative, including proper harness fitting and urgent wound treatment for animals like Juma, a young donkey who was whipped and overloaded until his legs gave out.

$4,000 (approx. €3,710 / £3,170) would fund a lifesaving Rabies Vaccination Campaign—shielding thousands of dogs and cats from a painful death and preventing human transmission in vulnerable communities.

$5,000 per month (approx. €4,640 / £3,960) is needed to keep our veterinary clinic and mobile outreach operational. This includes medical supplies, fuel for rural missions, and small stipends for the vets working day and night.

Even modest support goes a long way. Just $25 (approx. €23 / £20) provides deworming and wound care for one donkey. $50 (approx. €46 / £40) helps treat a street dog like Kito—ravaged by mange and infection, yet saved through antibiotics and nourishment. A monthly gift of $100 (approx. €93 / £79) could keep our mobile clinic moving into remote villages where no other help exists.

In places like Zanzibar, dogs are often poisoned en masse in response to public health fears. Donkeys are abandoned when they’re too weak to work. And yet, the animals are blameless. They’re suffering not from cruelty, but from scarcity. From a system that doesn’t see them. That doesn’t help them. That doesn’t fund them.

This is where we must act.

TAHUCHA has already treated over 11,000 dogs and 3,000 donkeys, vaccinated 1,200 cats, and educated countless community members. But without consistent support, their reach is limited. AFA is now stepping in to expand this vital work, to stand with TAHUCHA as they bring dignity and care to those who cannot speak for themselves.

Let’s Build This Together

Our dream is simple but bold: no animal in Tanzania or Zanzibar should suffer unseen. But dreams are not built alone.

We’re calling on our supporters—on you—to help us write this next chapter. Not just with donations, but with belief. With partnership. With action.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make your impact reach further, deeper, more meaningfully—this is your moment. Every dollar given to this partnership goes directly to the animals and the programs that serve them. Nothing wasted. Nothing diluted.

You helped us save lives in Ukraine, Morocco, India, and Serbia. Now we ask you to stand with us once more—for the donkeys in the mines, for the street dogs in Zanzibar, for the local vets who refuse to give up.

Together with TAHUCHA, Animals First Aid is where the world’s silence ends—and compassion begins.

Please, give what you can. Help us bring hope where it’s desperately needed.
