On March 8, social movements, women's collectives and unions organized a
public demonstration in the city of Sinop/MT. The demonstration markedthe memory of the struggle, denounced feminicide and violence against
women in the state of Mato Grosso, and demanded social rights. At one
point, a car drove by and threw a bomb at the protesters. This act is
yet another example of the hatred, misogyny and intensification of the
actions of the right and far-right in Mato Grosso, especially in Sinop.
---- With the rise of Bolsonaro and the offensive of the right and
far-right, violence and attacks against social movements, unions and
women's movements have increased in the state. In recent years,
persecution, intimidation and death threats against women, activists and
progressive people who express criticism or complaints have been recurrent.
In the context of women's mobilizations against Bolsonaro in 2018,
several activists were intimidated on social media, in their workplaces,
in their homes, and at mobilization sites. Men parked their cars in
front of their homes, photographed their lives, followed their vehicles,
and sent threatening messages. In the interior of the state, women who
participated in demonstrations were photographed and asked to be fired
from their jobs; in Sorriso, a teacher was threatened with death; in
Lucas do Rio Verde, students and teachers who participated in the
demonstration were threatened and insulted; in Sinop, activists from
collectives were seriously threatened.
Sinop has experienced several acts of hate and violence. In addition to
the persecution surrounding "Women against Bolsonaro," attempts to
silence women who take part in politics and social struggles are
constant. In November 2022, a PT councilwoman and a UFMT professor were
the target of insults on social media, harassment, requests for their
dismissal from their positions, and death threats, as a result of their
criticism of agribusiness and its barons at a public hearing. Since
then, these practices have intensified more and more, while feminicides
and violence against women have increased in the city and in the state
of Mato Grosso in general.
With conservatism rooted in the foundations of Mato Grosso's social
structure and with several cities under the control of agribusiness,
Mato Grosso faces the challenge of combating the advance of the far
right in a scenario of tension and tension. Holding debates and
demonstrating on the streets of Sinop has meant taking risks. Despite
this, women and workers in general continue to fight back. The
difficulties are many, but the way forward continues to be the
organization and struggle of the oppressed classes.
This fight requires the strengthening of a women's front of struggle,
organizing alongside women in their territories, study spaces,
workplaces and homes. Above all, it is urgent to advance collective
self-defense strategies. Violence against social demonstrations will not
go unnoticed. Reporting is important! Organize, do not abandon the
streets and keep fighting!
We, at the OSL, extend our solidarity to the women of SINOP and the
movements attacked on March 8!
