WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - THE CITY SCOOP - Staten Island buses lag behind other boroughs

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 2025

Today's SCOOP is brought to you by our members.

Dear New Yorkers,

For Staten Islanders lined up for MTA buses outside the St. George Terminal on a recent evening, the occasional announcements sound all too familiar.

“There will be no S40 for this boat,” a voice said over a loudspeaker.

A few minutes later, the voice piped up again, instructing riders, “Do not wait for the [S]81, it will not show for this boat.”

Commuters on the island’s local bus routes, which last month carried close to 100,000 riders on weekdays, said they have grudgingly grown accustomed to such unwelcome service alerts.

THE CITY’s analysis of MTA data shows that Staten Island local bus riders’ excess wait times — which measure how long riders are at a stop beyond the scheduled wait time — were nearly double the citywide average in 2024.

The spotty service has led to stranded commuters, low customer satisfaction scores and even protests.

Weather ☀️

The good vibes continue: low 70s and sunny.

MTA 🚇

There’s no Q train between 34 Street-Herald Square in Manhattan and Atlantic Ave-Barclays Center in Brooklyn overnight — every weeknight this week and next. Find all the MTA’s planned changes and the latest delays here.

Alternate side parking 🚙

It’s in effect today, April 23.

By the way…

Self-described as a “civic epic,” a new documentary Emergent City about the development of Industry City in Sunset Park is opening on Friday (and THE CITY’s Alyssa Katz will be moderating a Q&A on April 30). Get tickets for $16 each here.
