WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - THE CITY SCOOP - The NY gang member database that’s being shared with ICE

Today's SCOOP is brought to you by our members.

Dear New Yorkers,

As President Donald Trump’s administration rounds up hundreds of immigrants it claims are gang members and sends them to a Salvadoran prison, New York state is quietly feeding federal authorities information that could fuel the White House’s extrajudicial deportation machine.

The New York State Police maintain a database of more than 5,100 people they’ve designated as members of criminal gangs — and funnel the information into a federal database used by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a New York Focus investigation has found.

Similar to the pattern we’ve seen so far with the Trump administration, the state police designate people as gang members — including people who may never have been charged with a crime — using highly speculative criteria like where they spend their time, whom they talk to, what clothing they wear and what tattoos they have.

And the state police don’t publicize the database’s existence. Six New York-based gang policing and surveillance experts and activists said they hadn’t heard of it, and the agency’s annual reports only briefly mention it by an acronym.

Yet it’s been shared with ICE for over 20 years.

Council Calls DOT ‘Woefully Unprepared’ to Handle New Outdoor Dining Applications

More than 2,600 outdoor dining applications have received some sort of approval to open as the roadside dining season kicked off earlier this month — but just 77 restaurants have been given the full approval,  officials shared at a City Council hearing on Wednesday.

Department of Transportation First Deputy Commissioner Margaret Forgione said during testimony that  her agency has received more than 3,900 applications from 3,200 restaurants and other dining establishments.

More than 500 spots were denied or had to withdraw their applications because of location, like too close to a bus stop or hydrant, others sent in substandard renderings or documentation, she added.

Restrictive new regulations for outdoor dining were approved by the City Council last year but members on Wednesday blasted the DOT’s rollout of the upgraded program, originally rolled out during pandemic indoor dining restrictions.

Councilmember Julie Menin questioned the “user-friendliess” of the DOT’s application and the backlog for approvals.

“The DOT is woefully unprepared to meet this moment for thousands of small businesses and their eager patrons,” she said.
