After three months of occupation of the Gaîté Lyrique by 400
unaccompanied and exiled minors, the government's response has beenhundreds of riot police officers and more than 25 temporary detention
orders (OQTF). While the Belleville Park Youth Collective demanded
decent reception and accommodation solutions, they were met with a
forceful intervention by law enforcement on Tuesday, March 18th. They
were surrounded, gassed, clubbed, and ultimately subjected to temporary
detention orders (OQTF). This was the response from the Paris
Prefecture. Retailleau, the racist Interior Minister of the current
government, was quick to praise the police intervention.
The Collective has been mobilizing since last December to highlight the
plight of thousands of people on the streets who, abandoned by public
services, have no choice but to organize themselves to find housing
solutions.
As a reminder, unaccompanied minors live in extremely precarious
conditions, as some emergency shelters are reserved for adults, while
others have insufficient capacity. At the same time, their minority
status is challenged by the prefectures, which are responsible for
enforcing state racism.
In a context where support for Palestine is repressed, where the
stripping of nationality is brandished as a means of opposing the
racists ruling the country, and where the ban on wearing the veil in the
street is beginning to emerge in the discourse of far-right politicians,
the only solution is an unconditional, strong, and united mobilization
in solidarity with all exiled people!
