WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, UCL AL #359 - Trade Unionism - Union Independence: Should Trade Unionism Save the New Popular Front? (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Published on Médiapart and reprinted in L'Humanité, among others, here

is a curious appeal that doesn't seem to be making much noise in our
organizations, even though three former general secretaries of the three
"combative" unions are signatories: Thibault (CGT), Aschieri (FSU), and
Beynel (Solidaires). Along with them are more than a hundred activists
who have held, and some still hold, high-level positions in the three
organizations. The gist of the document poses no major problems: anger
at Macron and his governments, a call for union unity in the face of the
far-right threat... let's just say it's a familiar story. The
conclusion, however, is more surprising, since it aims to encourage
activists from political parties, unions, and "citizen" associations to
organize debates and build local New Popular Front collectives. This was
in order to secure a single candidate for the upcoming presidential
election, presented as a condition for electoral victory.

A sense of déjà vu...
After the presidential campaign around Juquin, which attracted former
members of the French Communist Party (PCF), the Socialist Party (PSU),
environmentalists, and anti-racists, with the national logistical
support of the LCR, some believed in the emergence of a new
"alternative" political force. A new PSU, in short, positioned between
reform and revolution... but linked to the reformists to secure elected
officials. This hope was revived after the "No to the European
Constitution" campaign in 2005, until the French Communist Party imposed
Buffet's candidacy on the local committees of the time in 2007,
shattering the fragile framework. This was especially true since a new
majority within the LCR, for its part, rejected the disappearance of a
revolutionary program in favor of a radical reformist project.

We are making this brief historical reminder because the list of the
first signatories, mostly retirees, includes many activists who were
already behind the initiative in 1988 and later: leaders of right-wing
factions emerging from the LCR and the NPA splits, or former Re-Founders
of the PCF. Plus, the indestructible Gérard Filoche, who went directly
from the LCR political bureau to the national bureau of the PS with his
small cohort of followers. More surprisingly, we find among the
signatories activists who, in their time, zealously played the CGT/PCF
powerhouse and hunted down "leftists" in their unions.

We can hear and even practice the "blockade vote" against the far right.
Even though it is the repeated betrayals of left-wing governments that
have enabled the rise of the National Front (RN). A national meeting of
these local NFP collectives will take place all day Saturday, March 22,
in Paris, and so much for the anti-racist demonstrations taking place
the same day across the country. This framework, which promotes a
left-wing primary, actually seems to be supporting Clémentine Autain's
candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. We're taking the same
people and starting again!

Beyond respect for the Amiens Charter and the political use of union
positions, there is a fundamental difference that opposes us to this
approach: the subjugation of unions to "left-wing" political parties and
electoral agendas versus the autonomy of the social movement toward an
expropriatory general strike. Without hesitation, we maintain the
compass of revolutionary syndicalism.
