 As the Antimilitarist Assembly, we have been stating since 2021, before

the official start of the major conflicts and genocides underway, that
rearmament is an essential component of the current international system
based on states, capitalism and abuse. In particular, with the war in
Ukraine and the rhetoric of the “good” and the “bad” there has been an
attempt to pass off military spending, which is constantly increasing,
as virtuous, and the production of death as at the same time a driving
force for the economy and a defensive necessity. With this propaganda
there has also been an attempt to pass off pacifism, antimilitarism and
all forms of conscientious objection as obsolete concepts and practices
that the lie of the looming Enemy presents not only as utopian but also
as harmful.

These surreal lies, based on intelligence information that claims to
predict the exact moment when the “bad guys” will attack us, are
instrumental in legitimizing European rearmament programs (ReArmEurope,
then Readiness 2030, etc.). These constitute a qualitative leap in this
perverse logic. One of the pretexts with which this gigantic European
project is justified is deterrence, but this, and the related arms race,
have never led to peace, but rather to the escalation of war. On the one
hand, the EU denies the historic principles, with which it has always
had little to do, which saw European federalism as a way of saying
enough to all wars. On the other hand, an institution that has always
opposed rigid budget constraints to all social spending (health,
education, social services, social security, public salaries, etc.)
proclaims, with great rhetoric, that these constraints can be largely
exceeded with the 800 billion so far planned for rearmament, obviously
still at the expense of the aforementioned social spending. In short, we
are facing a double disaster: social, due to further cuts to welfare and
rights; war, because this crazy escalation, if not stopped in time, can
only lead to catastrophic scenarios of conflict.

The Russian, Ukrainian and now European working classes in general are
increasingly united by being both ATMs for rearmament and cannon fodder
for the massacre. Regarding Ukraine, the price that the “generous” West
demands in order not to let it become part of the Russian empire again
is to become an American colony in all respects with the transfer of its
mineral resources, a step for which the institutional left blames the
Trump administration. But they forget to say that their champions, in
Washington as in Brussels, would sooner or later inevitably do the same,
in one form or another. Not to mention the interests of Western
companies in the post-conflict reconstruction of a “friendly” country.

In all these cases, as we have long denounced, the external war is
completed by the internal war, made up of the growing militarization of
society, liberticidal legislation, growing criminalization of dissent
and further restriction of spaces of freedom also through the action of
the extreme right.

As the Antimilitarist Assembly, we launch an appeal to all the realities
that oppose the war and support the objection, to the movements, to the
conflictual and grassroots unionism, to all the exploited, to build a
broad social and class opposition to militarism. We invite all these
realities to promote initiatives against European rearmament, to develop
antimilitarist contents in the deadlines of April 25 and May 1, and we
identify the date of June 2 as a reference for the continuation of this
campaign. In the meantime, we continue to support the antimilitarist
initiatives underway in the various local realities.

We also appeal to the international antimilitarist realities to give
this campaign a European dimension. If in the "West" for now we are not
forced to desert the fighting, we must however begin to desert with our
consciences, and refuse to be enlisted by warmongering propaganda. We do
not enlist alongside this or that imperialist state. We reject patriotic
rhetoric – even when it dresses in the good Europeanist guise – as an
element of legitimacy of States and their expansionist claims,
functional to the interests of capitalism. Everywhere. There are no good
nationalisms. We are on the side of those who, in every corner of the
earth, desert the war. We are defeatists against our government, and in
solidarity with those who fight against their own.

Only an international humanity will be able to lay the foundations of
that world of free and equal people that can put an end to wars. Let us
start again from our daily life to deny war propaganda at all levels, in
all places of life, sociality, work and study.
In schools, this propaganda is particularly serious because it is aimed
at enlistment, presenting a military career as a positive path to
professional fulfillment, while it is nothing more than the
professionalization of killing and being killed. Instead, we need to
awaken a critical and antimilitarist conscience throughout society, to
start again with vast initiatives in the squares and in the territories
against war installations and the production of death, for the general
strike against war and concrete support for all civilian victims and all
those who object, desert and refuse to fight, regardless of the color of
the flag to which they did not want to submit.

We want a world without borders, armies, oppression, exploitation and war.
