Among the criminals against humanity, Nazi doctor Josef Mengele is one
of the most terrifying figures. Born in 1911 in Bavaria to a Germannationalist family, his father, a wealthy landowner, joined the Nazi
Party in 1931. His son followed the same path: while a medical student,
he joined paramilitary groups, first the League of Front Soldiers, then
the Assault Squads in 1934, when they eliminated the working-class
component, before joining the SS in 1937. Having become an
anthropologist, he worked at the Biology Institute and participated in
the development of racialist doctrine. During the invasion of the Soviet
Union in 1941, he participated in combat, where he was wounded. From
that date on, the SS entrusted him with the responsibility of conducting
human trials in the extermination camps. Initially tasked with
overseeing dispensaries, he quickly began experimenting on Jews and
Gypsies. The book recalls the abjectness with which he carried out
numerous experiments for both eugenic and racialist purposes. His
obsessive anti-Semitism allowed him to break with the basic principles
of medicine. Although arrested, he managed to avoid recognition and flee
Europe in 1949. He then hid in Argentina where, under the cover of
professional activities, he continued to lead networks of former Nazis.
Practicing medicine illegally, the Argentine justice system began
looking for him for this reason and not because he was a Nazi on the
run. Mengele, under his real name, obtained Uruguayan nationality before
taking refuge in Paraguay and then in Brazil, protected by a network of
former Nazis, despite the hunt for him. The criminal was able to die a
free and natural death without justice being served.
