feminisms from the French Revolution to the present day (including the
Mazan trial), historian Ludivine Bantigny once again uses a formula that
worked wonders in her book on the Paris Commune[1]: bringing out the
forgotten women, often of modest origins, whose struggles and writings
lay dormant in the archives. And it is also for this effort to go beyond
a history of "great women" alone that this book is worth reading.
Chapter after chapter interweaves the commitments of women in the
social, political, and intellectual struggles of their time,
highlighting the interdependence between these different fields to
establish an emancipatory feminism. Feminism as a continuum in perpetual
construction.

A tense and passionate, yet always clear and precise writing style
facilitates the flow of portraits, emblematic struggles, and periods. In
conclusion, Ludivine Bantigny calls for a transhistorical and
transcurrent sisterhood. The decisive battles waged by women were not
always in the name of "feminism," and the ideological divisions within
feminist movements are very real, but nothing should hinder the
solidarity and compassion that is essential to winning the battles that
remain.
