This Easter Monday, we learned of the death of Pope Francis after twelve
years of pontificate. This provided an opportunity for many heads ofstate, such as Emmanuel Macron, to send out numerous messages to the
Catholic community. Sometimes to the detriment of the French state's
principle of neutrality and secularism: the government's decision to fly
flags at half-mast on public buildings on the day of the funeral drew
widespread criticism, primarily from the left. Between now and the
conclave in May, the 135 voting cardinals have already begun meeting
behind closed doors. We will soon find out whether they have decided to
place at their head an old man who is just a bit conservative or a
downright reactionary.
Among the "papatables," Robert Sarah declared that "what Nazism and
Communism were in the 20th century, Western homosexuality, abortion
ideologies, and Islamic fanaticism are today." Charming.
Pope Francis, for his part, was seen as a progressive within the Church,
particularly regarding homosexuality. But these declarations of
principle were never followed by structural reforms, as he struggled to
restore the image of a Church shaken by numerous child sex scandals.
Moreover, his tolerance only extended to a certain point, as he warned
against "the dangers of gender ideology"... This is an opportunity for
us to remind ourselves that the Church remains - and will remain
tomorrow - a profoundly reactionary institution.
