In December, the Freedom Flotilla of La Spezia and Massa Carrara
launched the idea of organizing an interregional procession, mainly
based on the issue of the genocide of the Palestinian people underway in
Gaza and the worsening of apartheid in the West Bank by the Israeli
Zionist state. The city of La Spezia was immediately identified as the
place to organize the procession. ---- The appeal of the Freedom
Flotilla was taken up by various social and political entities in the
area (NonUnaDiMeno, Coordinamento antimilitarista, anarchists,
Rifondazione comunista, Arci etc.) and several well-attended assemblies
followed. The antimilitarist-libertarian component has tried to
stimulate the debate, contributing, together with other subjects, to
broaden the view, placing at the center a radical opposition to all wars
and to the war industries that profit from them.
As is known, La Spezia is one of the cities with the greatest presence
of the war industry, starting with Leonardo S.p.a. which is also a
supplier of weapons to Israel. Therefore, a demonstration against the
war in the Ligurian capital takes on a particularly important meaning.
"La Spezia, a city symbol of Italian military production, becomes the
protagonist of a mobilization for peace and civil reconversion". This is
one of the appeals for the procession of May 31.
The Palestinian question, with its load of horror and suffering, remains
at the center of the mobilization with its specificity, but is also
inserted into a more general framework.
In reality, the march had been called for May 17, but this date was
skipped because the square had already been requested by the fascists of
Casa Pound for their rally. So the day of the 17th, in La Spezia, was
marked by the anti-fascist mobilization with a truly impressive
counter-march against a few dozen "comrades" who had converged in the
Ligurian capital. On the other hand, on that occasion the arc of forces
deployed with the anti-Casa Pound counter-march was far too broad and
indistinct: not only did the square range from far-left forces to the
PD, but even the center-right mayor had given his support to the
anti-fascist march, with the obvious intent of weakening it.
The day of May 31st will be decidedly more selective:
"Against all wars and those who arm them; solidarity with the
Palestinian people; let's stop the genocide in Gaza; against the
militarization of society and consciences; against the liberticidal laws
that would like us to be silent and compliant" (from the summary flyer
of the demonstration).
Within this framework, the anarchist and libertarian segment will be
placed, which will bring its radically antimilitarist message.
