Meraviglia. ---- Our homeland is the whole world. ---- A PREJUDICE ----Anarchy is an unattainable ideal because its practice requires a world
completely alien to the one we live in. ---- We would be careful not to
make such a statement if it were any other more or less misguided idea
that reaffirmed the principle of association based on a social authority
but since it is anarchy, that is, a society without government and law
of any kind, we declare it impossible without hesitation unless,
following a sudden leap in time, we could return to the Stone Age.
We will not free ourselves from the dagger or the bomb even if we remain
vigilant and exercise every form of control.
It is an epidemic that will pass as all epidemics do, but the gallows is
certainly not the cure that can cure it. The best treatment is the madhouse.
We consider it an infallible remedy.
For anarchists, death is a reason for coveted and desired honor, a
lifelong mental asylum would be dishonor and ridicule, a reason for
repentance and punishment. (the passage is taken from a long article
entitled A Council, which appeared in the August 18, 1897 issue of La
Republica Social published in Matarò)
The passage, which refers to the Spanish situation at the time, well
illustrates the widespread interpretation that anarchists were nothing
other than bloodthirsty attackers.
In Italy they were the object of study by Cesare Lombroso, who
considered them one of the most interesting typologies of criminality,
namely that of a political nature.
The scholar, like many others, had a limited vision of anarchism,
reducing it to the sole component of individualism, and illustrated his
theories in the essay Gli Anarchici, published in 1894, immediately
after the young individualist from Lodi Sante Caserio had assassinated
(or executed, according to the popular and libertarian point of view)
the President of the French Republic Sadi Carnot.
Of course, the reality is very different and multifaceted, as I will try
to highlight in the journey illustrated below, during which one comes
across personalities quite distant from the Lombrosian stereotype.
