We invite all comrades, coordinators, antimilitarist assemblies and all
the organizations that fight against all wars, against the war industry, the arms race and the militarization of society and consciences to
participate in the demonstration in La Spezia on May 31. As the
Antimilitarist Coordination Carrara we responded to the appeal launched
by Freedom Flottilla La Spezia and Massa Carrara in December to organize
a demonstration against the genocide in Palestine in the Ligurian city.
Several assemblies followed and immediately more topics developed that
converged on a shared platform that broadened the initial focus on Gaza,
on all wars and on the war industry. The history of the city is strongly
linked to the war industry and the Navy. La Spezia, with 15,000
inhabitants in 1861, developed around the Arsenal, commissioned by
Cavour, reaching a demographic increase in 1930 that brought the city to
115,000 inhabitants. After the war, the La Spezia Arsenal had 12,000
civilian employees, in 2023 it had less than 400. In 2022, the Navy
Engineering Corps started a project to adapt the base to NATO standards,
a project that is part of the Blue Bases program, investments that
exclusively concern military port infrastructures. In 2003, an
investigation was started into an alleged landfill of toxic substances
in the Arsenal area, but the proceedings ended without finding criminal
liability. Risks are linked to the transit and docking of nuclear
submarines. An emergency plan in the event of an accident has never been
communicated to the civil authorities and the population. OtoMelara, a
century-old La Spezia-based naval and land defense systems company, a
branch of the Leonardo group, has expanded its production with two new
projects: a tank and an armored vehicle, developed together with 50
percent of Rheinmetall, a German giant. Naval guns for navies around the
world, torpedoes and armored vehicles are produced in La Spezia.
A large training and training center for pilots of the Italian and
foreign armed forces will be built in Luni, and its construction will be
entrusted to a leading company in the Israeli military-industrial
complex. Comsubin, the operational group of special forces raiders of
the Navy, which between the operational group, school group, special
naval group and headquarters, have taken away the access to the sea that
remained to the people of La Spezia. It is for all this that being so
many in the square on May 31 in La Spezia is particularly significant
and important.
