Dear friends, In May, Network for Animals continued vital work to help dogs, cats and equines around the world who have no-one else to turn to – and all our life-saving work was made possible thanks to the compassion of our dedicated supporters.  From the gold mines of Tanzania to the busy streets of Morocco, read on to find out how your kindness brought food, care and hope to animals in need in May. EAST AFRICA Tanzania – Arusha  Rushing food and care to 100+ rescue dogs at a small, overwhelmed animal shelter Our partner, Mbwa Wa Africa (‘Dogs of Africa’ in Swahili), is the only registered animal shelter in a region spanning 14,500 square miles (37,500 km²). The shelter is a haven for more than 100 abandoned, abused and disabled dogs – many with permanent disabilities who may never find loving forever homes anywhere else. But with the cost of food and special medication rising each month, the shelter was overwhelmed. Thanks to our supporters’ generosity, we stepped in to help; for the next three months, the dogs will have food and medication, and salaries will be covered for the shelter’s dedicated dog carers. Credit: NFA/Byron Seale Tanzania – Geita   Providing a sanctuary for sick, injured and abused donkeys working in gold mines In Geita, Tanzania, more than 2,800 donkeys are worked to the brink of death at small-scale gold mines. Day after painful day, the animals are forced to haul back-breaking loads, leaving them with agonizing injuries. Our partner, the Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO), is the only group working across six mines in the region, providing vital vaccinations and emergency medical care for sick, injured and abused donkeys.  But the reality is that without a dedicated sanctuary, donkeys are forced straight back into brutal labor before they have had a chance to heal. With help from our donors, we are working to build a dedicated donkey sanctuary on-site – a safe space where sick and injured donkeys can finally rest and recover.  Read the original article here. Credit: LAZAWO NORTH AFRICA Morocco – Marrakech  Saving carriage horses from a life of unimaginable cruelty Every day in Marrakech, Morocco, horses drag heavy carriages through the streets, taking tourists on sight-seeing tours through the busy traffic and winding alleys. In the summer, horses often become so weak and dehydrated that they collapse in the street. Most of them are in shocking condition – exhausted, starving, injured and traumatized.  Thanks to our supporters’ donations, we are working alongside our partner, Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge, to carefully monitor conditions for carriage horses, educate horse owners on the importance of rest, proper care and humane treatment, and rescue and rehabilitate horses suffering life-threatening injuries and abuse.  Read the original article here. We helped rescue six abandoned Spanish hunting dogs, rushing them to the safety of our partner shelter, Galgos del Sur, for life-saving rehabilitation. Read more.
