The massive strike of May 1, 1886, and the events that followed, not
only propelled the movement for the 8-hour workday internationally, but, through the death sentence of eight activists, revealed with shocking
clarity the complicity between the state and the business class that
operates against any expression of resistance from the oppressed class.
---- The example of the Chicago martyrs: George Engel, August Spies,
Albert Parsons, and Adolph Fischer, Samuel Fielden, Louis Lingg, Michael
Schwab, and Oscar Neebe, sparked a wave of international solidarity. In
the years that followed, May 1 became an emblem of the working class
around the world. This direct confrontation with the employers and the
government by the workers led to the death sentences of eight workers:
George Engel, August Spies, Albert Parsons, Adolph Fischer, Samuel
Fielden, Louis Lingg, Michael Schwab, and Oscar Neebe, the Chicago
Martyrs. The example of these comrades who gave their lives for the
workers' struggle sparked large demonstrations, rallies, and strikes in
solidarity internationally, and the cause was taken up by workers around
the world.
This significant date for the oppressed classes finds us in a context of
brutal attacks on our living conditions. The Milei government has
exacerbated the most nefarious characteristics of a cruel and unbridled
capitalism. Millions of new poor people, wages that fall short of basic
needs, pensions that do not even reach extreme poverty, repression of
social protest, and the withdrawal of labor rights are some of the
direct attacks on those at the bottom. All of this is part of an
economic, political, and social program that seeks to create favorable
conditions for large multinationals to find cheap labor to exploit and
unconditional natural resources to plunder-in other words, to keep the
United States' backyard organized and peaceful. Nothing new under the
sun, nothing new.
Meanwhile, the sectors that claim to be "opponents" of this program and
are subordinated to electoral and institutional logic demonstrate their
failure year after year. In the last decade, the economic, social, and
political crisis has deepened, and those at the bottom are increasingly
worse off, regardless of who governs. There is no transformative
proposal within the margins of the State and its institutions; there is
no possibility of a social order without poverty, subjugation, and
exploitation in this capitalist system.
The historic achievements of those at the bottom-labor rights, pension
rights, safe, and free legal abortion, to name just a few-were achieved
through the organization and struggle of the oppressed classes. History
demonstrates this overwhelmingly. From the glorious deeds of the Chicago
Martyrs to the present day, it has been the tenacity of the struggles of
the oppressed classes, organized from below, that has been able to twist
the arm of history in favor of those at the bottom. That is why today
our call is to strengthen these processes of organization and struggle.
In the face of individualism, competition, and social fragmentation, we
must sow class solidarity, a necessary condition for confronting these
advances of the ruling class.
It is urgent to recover the tools of unions, placing them in the hands
of workers' organizations based on class independence, without
interference from the state or employers, so that they once again become
protagonists in this struggle. We must rebuild territorial and student
organizations. We must get to work in all social spheres to build
popular power. We must build the power of the people that will advance a
definitive break with this system of domination. Only by overthrowing
the capitalist system is it possible to change this unjust and
bloodthirsty social order, in which while a few have everything,
millions upon millions are exploited, enslaved, and subjugated.
The task is enormous, but indispensable. Today and every day, we must
reclaim this historical legacy to advance the construction of a society
without oppressors or oppressed, for socialism in freedom.
