The former DOPS in Belo Horizonte was one of the largest torture centers
during the military dictatorship. A broad mobilization fought for thesite to be transformed into a Human Rights Memorial, but even after
approval by different authorities (with a law sanctioned 25 years ago),
the project was never implemented. On April 1st, the anniversary of the
1964 coup, social movements occupied the building to demand that the
government of Minas Gerais implement the proposal. ---- Last Friday, the
9th, the Zema (Novo) government took the occupation to court and was
authorized to carry out the eviction, demonstrating once again its
authoritarian policy. The governor, one of the most idolized figures by
the far right, prefers yet another abandoned building in the center of
the capital of Minas Gerais to transform it into a place of memory of
the horrors of the dictatorship and the fight for rights and freedom.
The OSL joins the resistance so that the Human Rights Memorial is
definitively implemented, so that the crimes of the dictatorship are
never forgotten or forgiven, and so that the memory of the struggles of
all the people who resisted is always remembered.
We call on everyone to come to Av. Afonso Pena, 2351, in downtown BH,
and join the resistance against the eviction! Solidarity donations of
food and drinking water are very welcome!
