Early on Friday 13 June, Israel launched jet attacks against over 100
targets in Iran. As well as dropping huge bombs on the Natanz complexand other locations linked to Iran's nuclear program, it assassinated
military leaders and civilian scientists in attacks on their homes. As
is also usual for Israeli assassinations in Gaza, many family members
and neighbours of the targets were murdered as well. Iranian news
reports that 78 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on
residential areas in Tehran.
The Start of a War
These attacks were not a one-off strike, but the start of a war. Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made a television address boasting
about the attacks and saying they would continue "for as long as
necessary". While the United States has been at pains to state that
Israel was acting unilaterally, US President Donald Trump described the
attacks as "excellent" and has threatened that Israel has "even more
brutal" attacks in store. Israel has not yet been clear about its war
aims. At the time of writing this statement, Iran had not yet responded
militarily.
Israeli statements indicate that its government believes the Iranian
regime's support base is so thin that a campaign of assassination of
Iranian leaders may result in the regime's collapse. This is delusional
thinking. While the Ayatollahs definitely have the support of well under
half the population, the regime is solid enough to have put down,
unaided by foreign allies, a series of popular uprisings in recent
years. In addition, many who detest the theocratic rule of the clergy
will still be compelled to defend the regime against Israel's deadly
attacks.
Zionism Off the Leash
Netanyahu has been itching to carry out these attacks for years.
Previous US administrations had restrained it, fearful that the
repercussions would be uncontrollable. The Pentagon has repeatedly
advised US Presidents that there are no good military options in
relation to Iran. Given Iran's defences, an invasion is a chancy thing.
Even worse, any assault short of regime change will only consolidate the
Ayatollahs in power, while regime change would necessitate the
occupation of a mountainous country larger than Iraq and Afghanistan
combined. Regardless of whether Trump has unleashed Israel or whether
Israel has slipped it without authorisation, the US is no longer able to
control the consequences fully. A wider war is a distinct possibility.
Workers Must Act
The Anarchist Communist Federation is opposed to all States and their
militaries, worldwide. As such, ACF-M does not support Iranian military
retaliation to the Israeli bombings. Such action would kill Israeli
civilians and further consolidate Israeli workers behind their Zionist
rulers. Rather, we advocate the defence of Iran by the international
working class. To do this, workers must mobilise politically and use
their industrial power in the workplace to isolate Israel and make its
war impossible. In particular, this requires black bans on the export of
war materiel, automobiles, oil and petroleum products to Israel. This
would cripple the Zionist war machine and make the Israeli economy grind
to a halt.
Here in Australia, the major impact that workers can have is on the
export of parts for the F35 fighter-bomber. Though these go into a
global pool serving all twelve users of the F35, it is Israel which has
the continuous need for large quantities of spare parts, caused by its
genocidal campaign against Gaza and now its war against Iran. Some of
the parts manufactured in Australia are made nowhere else. This includes
the bomb bay doors, without which the F35 cannot fly.
To prevent them reaching the hands of Israel, unions in Australia need
to black ban the export of all parts for the F35. Because this would be
unprotected action, and the reaction of the entire capitalist class
would be savage, the workers and unions involved will need the backing
of the whole union movement. And because the Labor Party would use all
its power to try to stop the actions, workers need to mobilise at the
rank and file level to impose these bans against the resistance of
officials who prove unwilling.
By stopping the flow of war materiel to Israel and making its economy
grind to a halt, workers would not only stop Israel's war on Iran, but
also stop its campaign of genocide in Gaza, its military attacks on
Lebanon and its continued encroachment on Syrian territory. This would
be a profound defeat for Israel and cause a political crisis within
Zionism, opening up new possibilities for the struggle for justice in
Palestine and across the wider region. And finally, and most importantly
of all, it would demonstrate that workers have the power to make the
world a better place. We can defeat the capitalists, make a revolution
and create a society of freedom, equality and justice for all.
