A series of successful feminist strikes: this is the story of a book
translated and published by Syndicalist Editions. It shows how a unionin the Southern Basque Country has transformed itself to adapt to
today's workforce and adopt organizational forms that enable it to win
struggles in the most precarious sectors. A must-read for enthusiasm and
inspiration! In the Southern Basque Country, the ELA union has managed
to secure numerous victories against employers. With its refusal of
social dialogue and its permanent strike fund, this confederation has
managed to hold strikes lasting several months, even in the most
precarious sectors. The most precarious jobs are also often the most
feminized. This is the heart of the two struggles recounted in this
book, which show how a union is committed to a feminist approach and
making the fight against patriarchy a concrete priority.
Whether it's the progress made in the long struggle of retirement homes
in Bizkaia (378 days of strikes), or in the battle to eliminate the wage
gap between office cleaning (a very female-dominated sector) and street
cleaning (a very male-dominated sector), it's safe to say that the ELA
method is bearing fruit. The thousands of women workers involved in
these conflicts have gained spectacular pay increases, better working
conditions... and, very often, a feminist awakening.
In this book, the strikers recount the dignity they achieved through
collective organizing, and Onintza Irureta Azkune (journalist) and Aiala
Elorrieta Agirre (economist) provide keys to understanding these
victorious struggles in the Basque Country, intended for all trade
unionists and feminists who would like to draw inspiration from them.
