Deep concern is going through Niscemi in these days of war. ---- The
conflict that arose from the Israeli attack on Iran is causing a lot of
fear in the population of Niscemi, it is well known that the No Muos
base is once again at the center of attention. Since Ukraine was invaded
by Russia and since after October 7, Israel responded in a deadly and
resolute manner to the attack of the Palestinian resistance, unleashing
a destructive and exterminated reaction against the Palestinian
population of Gaza, mortally sealing off the territories of the West
Bank; since the escalation of war has intensified, awareness of the
risks at local level has grown.
Muos plays a leading role in all theaters of war, not least the American
bombing of Iranian nuclear sites.
Fear has become a reality among the people of Niscemi, but, I might add,
also in Sicily as a whole.
As the comrades of the local No Muos committee tell us, since the war
broke out, a considerable part of the population has been resorting to
psychotropic drugs to be able to bear the daily news from the war
fronts, trying to push away the anxiety and depression produced by
living with a military site that kills every day inside and outside the
city territory.
Yes, the Muos kills, and not only with war actions; it kills with the 46
NRTF antennas that for years have been causing tumors in the town and
the surrounding area with electromagnetic waves, in the total
indifference and complicity of the local, regional and national
political class.
We know it very well: militarism and war kill, just as in these
territories Eni's pollution and mafia violence kill, which now floods
the Niscemi territory with drugs.
In the days of the war against Iran, the No Muos, who have long been
promoting social issues, wrote to the Mayor and the City Council through
the citizens' committee, asking what measures they are putting in place
to protect the population from possible missile attacks.
An urgent request was also made for a City Council to discuss the
current situation and the actions to be taken. It is clear that we do
not expect anything from the institutions, this was just a way to get
them out in the open.
In recent days the Mayor of Niscemi, when he saw the letter from the No
Muos committee filed, immediately wrote to the central government asking
for reassurances on the state of affairs.
With the winds of war at the door, the politicians of the moment come
back to life on Saturday 28 June as if nothing had happened, CGIL and PD
hold a demonstration in front of the gates of the US base in Sigonella
on which the Muos and the NRTF antennas depend.
The politicians of the moment, as always, put the excellent corpse of
Pio la Torre in front of them, as a symbol of the fight against the
mafia and of the will of the PCI of the time to oppose the installation
of Cruise missiles in Comiso, when the PCI in Sicily, thanks to the Lega
Cooperative, wove political and economic relations with the mafia system
represented in a powerful way by the entrepreneurial and publishing
world of Catania, with the consequent agreements in the palaces of
Palermo and Rome.
We know how it ended, with Pio la Torre killed and Sicily shocked by
political mafia violence.
But the enemy does not always march at our head, the anti-war movement
is organizing a demonstration in Sigonella for July 6 and one on August
2 in Niscemi in front of the gates of the base.
Finally, I want to remember that in these years of war the NO MUOS
Movement fought here in Sicily in perfect solitude, supported by few and
ignored and opposed by many, proving that we have neither Masters nor
Godfathers.
