This year too, Roccatederighi awaits us for the SedicidAgosto festival
on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 August. The event - now a tradition - seesits eighth edition this year and is gradually becoming an increasingly
significant opportunity to meet, between music, debates, books and
self-productions. ---- Umanità Nova has historically promoted the
festival since the memorable first edition in 2017, which saw us present
in the rock amphitheater of the fortress; subsequently the event moved
to the heart of the town, disseminating the libertarian presence along
the main road, and then went to locate itself among the chestnut trees,
at the gates of the village, a place where it is also possible to camp
and spend pleasant days as well as politically and artistically
significant. On the afternoon of Sunday 17th, the editorial staff of
Umanità Nova, starting from the presentation of the book "Il laboratorio
dell'anarchia" by Davide Turcato, will activate a debate around the
weekly Umanità nova and the figure of Errico Malatesta who founded the
newspaper over 100 years ago.
The Festival is dedicated to the memory of Sante Caserio, the young
anarchist who was guillotined in Lyon on August 16, 1894 for having
killed the president of the French republic Sadi Carnot. Caserio is a
popular figure, who has given rise to the flourishing of many songs; the
moment of his capture, the interrogation, the death are recounted, but
what was important above all is what had happened before his tragic end.
He was a young anarchist activist from Milan convinced of the value of
propaganda, a assiduous disseminator of the anarchist press, for this
reason hit by repression and prison; forced to flee to France, he comes
to contemplate the assassination of Carnot, responsible for an
incredible anti-anarchist crackdown and the death sentence of many
comrades. Caserio's fate is linked to that of Pietro Gori, his comrade
in Milan and accused of being the inspiration for his gesture, therefore
forced in turn to flee to avoid being extradited from Lugano.
In Roccatederighi, Caserio is known, loved and sung in a heartbreaking
way. The popular tradition of a cappella singing has crossed paths with
contemporary reworkings. This is why the SedicidAgosto Festival is
dedicated to him every year, right here, where the bust of Francisco
Ferrer, repositioned after the fascist massacre, bears witness to the
rootedness of anarchist memory and the desire for the purest freedom.
And it is here that we find ourselves, in this land of the Alta Maremma,
a proud opponent of dictatorships and bosses, a land of revolts, of
strikes against exploitation in the mines, of rebellion and freedom, of
ties with free thought and anarchy, of contempt for power and hierarchy.
We thank the comrades who have made the realization of the Festival
possible this year too and we invite everyone to this event.
