The history of revolutionary conquests strengthens today's struggles!
---- Popular organization has been a protagonist in episodes around theworld. The date of July 19th offers us a couple of experiences where the
resistance of workers who refused to accept living under the authority
and supposed justice of the State sustained revolutionary processes for
years. ---- On July 19th, 1936, the Spanish Revolution began, and 76
years later, on that same date in 2012, the Rojava Revolution began.
---- In Barcelona, the autonomous organization of the people in
neighborhoods and factories built the capacity for resistance to prevent
the advance of a fascist coup directly sponsored by Italy and Germany.
Throughout Spain, organized people took to the streets and took up arms
to defend themselves against the rebellious military led by the local
fascist, and later dictator, Francisco Franco.
It was a process in which organized anarchism played a leading role and
a crucial influence in the various arenas of struggle, both on the front
lines and in the rearguard. It included rich experiences with rural
collectives in Aragon, workers' self-management in Barcelona, and
educational experiences inspired by the Modern School of the anarchist
Francisco Ferrer I Guardia in different parts of Spain. A revolution
that, in addition to the economic and political, also focused on a
cultural and moral revolution with countless experiences and activities
in cultural centers and libertarian athenaeums.
A process of struggle and organization that, starting in the early
1930s, in different situations and with different tools, was developing
a strong people capable of sustaining this Revolution.
In Kobane, the autonomous organization of the people made it possible to
resist a military siege imposed by the Islamic State and the Turkish state.
Throughout Rojava, the organized people made it possible for the
resistance in that territory, part of the Middle East, to be based on
women's freedom. A key idea in both experiences is organized resistance,
which doesn't happen overnight, but is built through everyday practices
of self-management and horizontality. It is a class-based resistance,
built around agreement regarding oppression and the identification of
who the oppressors are. Without organization, these agreements lose
their potential to propose real changes and, in the long term, become
revolutions. But when oppressions are fully identified, the people
develop tools so that resistance ceases to be an idea and effectively
becomes a practical exercise.
To achieve this, direct action and popular participation in decisions-as
we anarchists have always proposed-has proven to be a fundamental part.
This guarantees the legitimacy of decisions in which the people are not
simply a maneuvering mass, but the protagonists who accept no lords or
bosses.
In the different historical experiences of struggle, popular
organization has been able to promote changes based on collective
decisions on different social issues. And more precisely, self-defense
was patiently developed by the people in Spain and Rojava to levels that
enabled them to resist the warlords' attempts to monopolize violence.
In the context of the revolutions in Spain and Rojava, we speak of
exercises in organized resistance that were able to stop civil
genocides, bring down authoritarian political systems, and propose new
possible worlds.
These stories show us that popular organization can develop sufficient
strength to stop fascism. If there is anything important about
remembering the struggles of peoples in different parts of the world, it
is because memory strengthens resistance. Remembering and analyzing the
moments when, as a people, we managed to live in freedom and solidarity,
when our longings as anarchists were realized, is part of what fuels our
dreams of a new world that we build every day and that we carry in our
hearts and in our struggle. On this date, we honor the workers of Spain
and Rojava, who fell demonstrating how to create and implement
alternatives to the violence imposed by the state every day.
Long live July 19th!
Long live organized resistance!
Long live the social revolution!
