WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova - The "Paper Tiger": Recounting the Social and Cultural Movements of the 2000s (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

We have received and are pleased to publish: "The Paper Tiger" is a

collection of fanzines, militant and countercultural magazines that
originated from an exhibition curated by Jacopo Frey, Silvia Casali, and
Lorenzo Martelli at the "Brutta Kina" self-production festival held at
the "La Cupa" social space in Ancona from July 10-11, 2025. Born from a
proposal by the "Regine Marce" collective that organizes the festival,
"The Paper Tiger" was the first opportunity to share with others the
many independent and underground productions that Jacopo has accumulated
over more than twenty years of involvement in social and political
realities, occupations, collectives, and festivals. Since these are true
traces of a personal journey as well as testimonies of collective
experiences now disappeared (such as productions linked to evicted
social centers, such as XM24 in Bologna), the exhibition featured
magazines that could document a season of struggles and mobilizations,
from the post-G8 period in Genoa to the recent protests for Palestine:
self-productions from the Onda years in Bologna such as "Idioteca",
"Burp!" or "Il Traghetto mangiamerda", political magazines such as
"Atemporale anarchico", "Invece" or "Miccia corta" and the more recent
"Sale" from Genoa, up to magazines linked to subcultures or music such
as "Lungidame", or "Beautiful freaks" or the French "Chéri-Bibi".
It was certainly a wonderful experience for those who organized it, but
the important thing is that the exhibition was a pleasant surprise for
those who visited: several people said they recognized their own works
among the materials on display or fanzines they had owned or otherwise
encountered over the years.
This is precisely the underlying meaning of the exhibition and the
direction we intend to follow in transforming this first event into a
truly permanent collection: to attempt to document, narrate, and perhaps
revive a political and cultural era that has been somewhat forgotten,
the one from 2001 to the present, one of the last to have used paper as
the primary tool of communication and expression.
For this reason, it would be important to acquire other publications and
perhaps try to imagine new stages in which to hold public outings with
"La Tigre di Carta." If you would like to share some old material
(fanzines, self-published works, small magazines, especially from
collectives and local organizations), stories, suggestions, or
proposals, please write to archiviolatigredicarta@gmail.com.
