We're not surprised that the Sughereta has burned once again, just as
we've been under siege for months across Sicily. We knew it wouldhappen, that our turn would come. But we're not giving up on the idea
that this is one of the most heavily guarded and monitored natural areas
in the region. Two days after the US Commander of Sigonella, a welcome
guest of Niscemi Mayor Massimiliano Conti, reassured us about the safety
of the MUOS military base in Niscemi, a fire has devastated the Niscemi
nature reserve where the MUOS is located. The US military commander, a
renowned expert on the effects of electromagnetic radiation on humans,
stated that there are no risks to the public's health. The Commander and
Mayor Conti agreed that it is necessary to further strengthen their
relationship of friendship and mutual respect. We wonder what friendship
and respect they are referring to if the demands of the population and
the No Muos movement have been ignored for almost ten years. What safety
are these two institutional representatives referring to, if they aren't
even capable of ensuring adequate prevention in the face of a disaster
of this magnitude.
The fire broke out around 3:00 PM yesterday. You noticed it because the
column of smoke was so high and wide that it was clearly visible from
Licata to Ragusa. The Canadairs, helicopters, and ground crews weren't
enough; the forest continued to burn throughout the night, and
extinguishing operations are still underway today.
The fire broke out on July 24th, not in April or May, so the necessary
precautionary measures hadn't yet been taken. What interventions have
the Forestry Corps and the Municipality implemented to protect the land
and forests? Why haven't they worked? Who is hiding the truth? Will the
judiciary intervene this time to determine who is responsible?
It's not the first time it's happened, but this time the extent of the
fire has truly robbed us of everything. We'd like to tell you that these
are cork oaks, trees naturally resistant to fire, and therefore the
greenery will return in due time, but the impact of the flames has been
inhumane and will not be.
How can we calculate the damage caused in economic, social, historical,
ecological, and landscape terms? It cannot be.
Our hearts burn with anger, just as our cork oak forest is still
burning, for this reason and for all the reasons that for years have
brought us through those paths that welcomed us, made us feel at home,
and enveloped us in the beauty of a land we will continue to protect.
With all the anger that moves us and perhaps even more, we'll see you on
August 2nd, starting at 4:00 PM, for a march starting from the nomuos
presidio, in Contra Ulmo, towards the MUOS base.
