office described it as "acting for personal gain." In practice, the
activists are being prosecuted for providing food and transporting an
Iraqi family and an Egyptian citizen from the forest to the nearest
town. Bringing the "Five" to court is another example of the
criminalization of activism and refugee assistance, the influx of which
regularly threatens us. All of this comes amidst the suspension of
asylum application procedures in Poland and the further extension of the
"zone" along the border with Belarus. Such actions prevent refugees from
legally crossing the border, forcing them to traverse forests and swamps
and relying on the support of grassroots groups, which are equated with
smugglers for their assistance.
If you detect a whiff of fascism in this rhetoric, you are absolutely right.
This is confirmed by the fact that organizations such as Ordo Iuris and
the Independence March Association (interestingly, represented by a
single lawyer) were allowed to participate in the trial as "social parties."
Just in case you were unsure which side the prosecutor's office and the
heroic defenders of the line on the map are on.

Failing to provide assistance to a person in a situation where there is
an immediate risk of death or serious bodily harm is punishable by
imprisonment. What if providing assistance is also punishable by
imprisonment?
Therefore, this case sets a precedent. If we allow the Hajnówka Five to
be convicted, we will allow fascism and condemn all those who wish to
provide similar assistance in the future.

We therefore encourage all organizations and individuals who consider
themselves anti-fascist to take part in solidarity actions. We encourage
all those who refuse to be fooled into believing that helping others is
illegal.
