A few days ago in Massenzatico, a person died after being struck by a
taser fired by the police. According to a well-known local newspaper, the victim was "in a strong state of agitation." In short, they were
causing a disturbance in the street around dawn and, as a result of the
police intervention, lost their life. ---- We're not interested in
debating the victim's supposed danger or criminal record - that's not
the point. We checked, and we found no evidence that "disturbing the
peace" carries the death penalty. ---- The point is that for several
years now there has been a growing trend - massively accelerated by this
right-wing government and formalized by the latest security decree - to
handle everything through repression and the use of force. The political
plan is always the same: target the marginalized, social struggles,
anyone considered different or trying to build a libertarian,
solidaristic, and internationalist society. Without states, without
armies, without authoritarianism.
Meanwhile, white-collar crimes go unpunished, workplace homicides remain
without justice, and men who brutally assault their wives are
practically acquitted with reasoning offensive to any human being. At
the same time, repression crushes even the slightest dissent. And
increasingly often, those who encounter a police officer with a taser
are granted no hearing at all - they simply end up dead on the pavement,
killed by a so-called "non-lethal" weapon.
Even schoolchildren are persuaded of the taser's supposed
"non-lethality" when they are invited to police events - always with the
ultimate aim of militarizing schools and normalizing this whole system,
starting with the youngest.
The statements from police professional associations are incredible:
they staunchly defend the taser's use, immediately express closeness and
solidarity "with the colleague involved," and only at the very end -
almost as an afterthought - with the victim's family. Some don't even
mention the victim. What's more, they preemptively defend themselves,
citing other cases where autopsies supposedly excluded the taser as the
"direct" cause of death, joining in a self-absolving chorus that calls
for "clarifying the facts" before judging the officers.
Well, perhaps the "disturber of the peace" in Massenzatico would also
have liked the facts to be clarified - before the sentence was carried out.
