A worker-driven group with a three-letter name is part of the origin story of two new candidates for Congress — not DSA, but UAW.
Dalourny Nemorin and Darializa Avila Chevalier are both members of the United Auto Workers, part of a new wave of young New Yorkers mounting challenges to incumbent members of Congress, building on the momentum of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
As they launch their primary challenge campaigns against Reps. Ritchie Torres and Adriano Espaillat, arguing the incumbents are not delivering for constituents, the two women have much else in common. Both have worked for legal services organizations representing low-income New Yorkers. And there, both became deeply involved in union organizing with the UAW, which has increasingly become a power player in progressive New York politics.
Both see the incumbents as vulnerable — particularly Espaillat, who won less than 60% of the vote the last time he was opposed in a primary.

Want to know who else has announced a run for Congress in the city? We’re keeping track in our running list here.
Mamdani announced more than 400 members of his transition committees, while acknowledging that he would speak with the police commissioner about THE CITY’s earlier reporting on the NYPD’s role in an FBI investigation that included surveillance of a private Signal chat among volunteer observers at immigration courthouses.
So far, 70,000 people have applied to work for the Mamdani administration. But how many of those can reasonably hope to work at City Hall, and how do you work for the city anyway? We break down the basics.
Are theater kids Zohran Mamdani and Donald Trump having a bromance now, and did Jessica Tisch help bring them together? Is anyone not running for Congress? The FAQ NYC hosts discuss all that and much more before having an in-depth conversation with Crystal Hudson, the Brooklyn City Councilmember who’s one of the leading candidates to be the body’s next Speaker in the first of a series of interviews with the contenders. Listen here.
