It is a place where feral cats multiply because no one steps in to stop the suffering… except Nina. Day and night she crawls under abandoned buildings, sits for hours in silence with a trap on her lap, negotiates with hospitals and private properties, and brings terrified animals into safety with hands that never shake — no matter how severe the injury or how heartbreaking the scene. Credit:  Lanseria Ferals One trap at a time, Nina removed them, sterilised them… This September, the work became heavier than ever. The TNR project at Leratong Hospital revealed wave after wave of sick, injured, and pregnant cats living in impossible conditions. One trap at a time, Nina removed them, sterilised them, treated their infections, fed the starving, and returned only those healthy and strong enough to survive—and rehomed the ones who had no chance on the streets. The smell of burnt skin and the sight of his trembling frame would break anyone — but Nina refused to give up on him. With round-the-clock care, medication, and specialised feeding, Huey slowly began to trust the world again. At the same time, a wave of snare victims from Muldersdrift arrived — cats with torn flesh, infected wounds, and fear etched into their bodies. Every single one required vet care, sterilisation, transport, food, and follow-up. And just when Nina thought she had a moment to breathe, new emergencies appeared: abandoned kittens, “bottom feeders” dumped at feeding sites, and sickly strays showing up with nowhere else to turn.
