WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE EU - New York NY - New York City - THE CITY SCOOP - Mamdani’s pink slips on pause?

Dear New Yorkers,
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani swept into City Hall promising a clean break from the Eric Adams era. For nearly 200 political appointees, that initially meant a pink slip.
But the administration’s early attempt at a broad housecleaning is now facing a common city obstacle: union protections.
More than 30 of the 179 mayoral staffers who were notified they wouldn’t have a job in the next administration have formal civil service job titles that entitle them to internal administrative hearings if higher-ups try to fire or demote them.
Read more here about what happens next for those workers.
Bringing the Money Smart Financial Coaching Program to CUNY
Sound financial health helps set the foundation for strong and resilient households, communities and economies. That’s why JPMorganChase helped launch a new organization aimed at enhancing financial health and academic outcomes for college students called the Money Smart Financial Coaching Program, or MSFCP.org. The program, which combines financial coaching and education into one course, originated at SUNY Westchester Community College and is now offered at seven colleges and universities across New York. By leveraging local Chase Community Managers as guest lecturers, the initiative aims to improve students' financial skills, academic performance, and graduation rates.
Federal oversight for Horizon Juvenile Center has officially ended. A Southern District of New York judge on Tuesday issued an order to conclude court-appointed monitorship for The Bronx detention facility — an effort which began originally on Rikers Island in 2015 then applied to Horizon in 2018 when 16- and 17-year-olds were transferred there after the state passed its “Raise the Age” law a year earlier. The judge’s order this week followed a report by the federal monitor last month finding the Administration of Children Services, which oversees Horizon, “has demonstrated its internal capacity to identify and address its problems and challenges without the need for external oversight.”
ACS commissioner Jess Dannhauser said: “We are proud of the gains and, at the same time, are very clear: this is not the finish line. ACS remains committed to continuing to make improvements to promote a safe, supportive and growth-oriented environment for young people and staff in our secure detention centers.”
Advocates, however, remain concerned about overcrowding, “extremely unsanitary conditions” and “the denial of education and programming” at Horizon. “We continue to receive alarming accounts of serious injuries to our clients and flagrant staff misconduct across Horizon,” said Redmond Haskins, spokesperson for the Legal Aid Society, which represents the plaintiffs in the civil-rights lawsuit that led to the monitorship.
