On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
and Gender Minorities, we are demonstrating against patriarchal
violence, but that is not enough. It is an entire system that must be
destroyed. ---- The current climate is one of rising far-right
sentiment, everywhere, including in France. Between social despair ("we
haven't tried them") and blatant racism, more and more people are
choosing to vote for racism, support for the wealthy, and
authoritarianism. Women, exiles and/or racialized people, LGBTQ+
individuals: many are at risk of losing their rights and becoming
victims of physical violence.
Wars and Austerity
Each of the numerous wars in the world is accompanied by its share of
violence against women and children. The French government is shifting
the economy towards the "war effort" at the expense of social policies.
And when wars end, many men return home with an excess of violence to
express. Once again, it is women who pay the price.
Support organizations for the poor, for women victims of violence, and
for family planning clinics are seeing their funding cut or disappear.
Growing poverty limits the opportunities for women victims of violence
to break free from their abusers, especially since finding help from
organizations is becoming increasingly difficult. Less funding for
organizations also means less violence prevention, less education, and
less training. Laws are not enough.
Since the Spanish comprehensive law, the number of femicides has
decreased by 10%. But laws don't solve everything. In France, it took 24
years for the implementation of the 2001 law establishing three sex
education sessions per year for every student throughout their schooling
to be reinstated. It was only at the end of January 2025 that the Higher
Council for Education issued a favorable opinion on the EVARS program.
However, the threats faced by teachers and the lack of resources make
its implementation extremely difficult. Added to this are the sexual
assaults suffered by students, whose testimonies are never truly taken
seriously and are often dismissed.
The constitutionalization of the right to abortion is another striking
example: celebrated with great fanfare last year, but with drastic cuts
to the allocated budgets, we are seeing more and more abortion clinics,
maternity wards, and family planning centers closing. The lack of
mobilization this past September 28th may even be a consequence of this
constitutionalization, even as the situation becomes increasingly critical.
The latest law on consent (a fundamental concept to consider) could
nevertheless contribute to further individualizing patriarchal violence,
fitting perfectly into a liberal framework. Society is not simply the
sum of its individuals; the injustices suffered are far from being
merely personal matters, remedied by individual punishment. There are
indeed structural conditions that recreate oppression on a collective
scale. We cannot simply dismiss these contexts. Let's demonstrate.
Let's demonstrate to say that every victim of every act of patriarchal
violence counts, and that we are keeping track of the numbers. Let's
demonstrate to say that it is unacceptable, that the social tolerance of
mistreatment inflicted on women, gender minorities, and children is
intolerable. Let's demonstrate to say that the weakening of public
services, the impoverishment of associations, and the calls for war only
exacerbate patriarchal violence.
Let's organize, let's unite our struggles!
