In a context of rising militarism, the UCL reaffirms its support for
anti-imperialist resistance movements and its rejection of all forms ofmilitarization of society. ---- Invited to speak before the Congress of
Mayors of France, General Mandon, Chief of the Defence Staff, uttered
some shocking statements, including one about the need for the French
people "to accept the idea of losing their children" in an upcoming
conflict. ---- The vast majority of the political class rejoiced; all
factions seize every opportunity to call for "national unity" and deny
the class struggle and the opposition between exploiters and exploited.
A few voices from the parliamentary left have been raised in protest.
But on what grounds? Some simply stated that it wasn't the role of the
Chief of Staff or that this wasn't the appropriate forum to discuss the
subject; others denied any imperialist threat in Europe.
This is part of a process of increasing militarization of society, of
increased military spending at the expense of social needs.
Riding the wave of military activity, Macron announced his intention to
reinstate military service in a voluntary form. Here again, our
political leaders either acquiesce or slightly amend it to "mandatory
civic service." The indoctrination of young people, and their
subjugation to the flag, is at the heart of the current political
project of the fascization of society.
The war in Ukraine is the perfect pretext for these pronouncements: at a
time of growing unpopularity for political leaders, ever-increasing
attacks against our class, and the deterioration of our living
conditions, it is easy to call for national unity to defend the flag.
Ideological and media pressure trivializes the army's role in society,
portraying it as serving the powerful. Let's not delude ourselves: it is
not France, Ukraine, or Russia that are losing their children in armed
conflict, but rather the working class.
Faced with the sound of jackboots, we reaffirm our support for popular
anti-imperialist resistance movements in Palestine, Ukraine, Kanaky, and
the rest of the former French colonies, as well as the fight against all
forms of militarization of society. In this latter perspective, the War
on War coalition now appears as the most relevant force for disarming
militarism. Its success or failure will depend on the collective effort
we are willing to make.
No war between peoples! No peace between classes!
