At the end of October, a group of students protested against Emanuele
Fiano, a member of the Democratic Party and secretary of the Left for
Israel party, while he was holding a debate at Ca' Foscari University in
Venice on the prospects for peace in Palestine. This incident provided
the opportunity for the newspaper of the Italian Episcopal Conference,
"Avvenire," to align itself with the guidelines of the anti-antisemitism
bills presented in parliament. From the very first lines of Daniele
Paolini's commentary, the Catholic newspaper labeled what happened at
Ca' Foscari as antisemitism, an example of hatred toward Jews.
According to Avvenire, setting one's goal to destroy the state of Israel
is antisemitism, echoing Fiano's words. The Left for Israel
representative stated that anyone who denies Jews the right to a state
is antisemitic.
I believe this statement deserves attention, especially from those, like
the anarchist movement, who believe that the state and government are
not the solution, but the cause of problems and suffering.
First, we must consider the role of the State of Israel. Representatives
of the anarchist movement have taken a stand against Zionism. For
example, Emma Goldman wrote in 1938: "For many years I have opposed
Zionism as the dream of capitalist Jewry throughout the world for a
Jewish State with all its attributes, such as government, laws, police,
militarism, and the rest. In other words, a Jewish State machine for
protecting the privileges of the few against the many."
Emma Goldman's words prefigure the current situation in Palestine, where
the State of Israel is a machine of oppression and war for the entire
region, aimed at defending the privileges of the few. In this context,
we must ask ourselves: is it possible to put a limit on Israeli
expansionism? Is peaceful coexistence with the State of Israel possible?
The answer given by Palestinian resistance organizations is yes. These
organizations, both those within the Palestinian National Authority and
the front formed by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the FDPLP, aim to
establish a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders and therefore
recognize the State of Israel. In reality, the entire struggle, violent
or otherwise, including the action of October 7, 2023, is explained by
the goal of obtaining some form of recognition from Israel. The peace
agreement in Gaza responds to this Palestinian political demand and the
political class's aspiration to govern what will ultimately be nothing
more than tiny bantustans under Israeli control. Meanwhile, not only is
the truce continually violated by Israeli forces, but the Tel Aviv
government continues its expansionist policy in the West Bank, Lebanon,
Syria, and Gaza.
In this context, the slogan "Free Palestine from the River to the Sea"
is not the goal of Palestinian resistance organizations. This is
demonstrated by Beijing's agreement between 16 organizations, as well as
by Hamas's participation in the new Palestinian Authority in Gaza
alongside the Palestinian National Authority, in line with the peace
plan proposed by the United States. But this political realism actually
operates on a utopian level: what is happening before our eyes
demonstrates that the establishment of two states for two peoples will
not end the war. To achieve peace, we must get rid of states and
governments, with their retinue of soldiers and priests, and therefore
also destroy the state of Israel.
Just as only the destruction of the state of Israel will bring peace to
Palestine, so peace throughout the world will only come with the
destruction of all states.
The position taken by "Avvenire" reveals how the Church's "openness" is
merely instrumental, aimed at defending its own power and its function
as an ideological prop for Western imperialism.
